Surprise wedding?

Surprise wedding?

We've been together/living together for over 5 years and just got engaged...Since we're an unconventional couple, we're trying to do something out of the box.

Planning a big eyetalian wedding has zero appeal to us, although that's our heritage. When suddenly, this idea came to me---a surprise wedding. Send out nicely crafted invites to our 'Engagement party celebration', which is hosted at a nice venue.

The time of day and time of year are totally flexible. The challenge: making sure that everyone that we want to be there, is there, and doesnt discredit an 'engagement party celebration' as being something lesser. (When, 'surprise! you're really at our wedding!')

i think it will be a hoot n'holler. Anyone out there pull a surprise wedding off?

My other question: how do you i tap into the parental wedding fund, for an over-the-top 'engagement party' (they paid for 2/3 of my sisters wedding 5 years ago.)

Would love any feedback/ideas.

Just think: no bridal party b.s., no pouffy dress, no tuxes, no limos to deal with.
Only a dj, table decor, decorations, invites, and a venue.

I love that idea! Just think about it first- will it make your family feel bad being left out of the plans?

I know my mother would have been disappointed. Also, I don't know how you would get the money without telling them, maybe you could include a few close family members in the plans?

I think thats awesome. Tell ure parental units. U are gonna have a small wedding but want to have a larger e-party. People do really do that.

you make a great point---but the thing is, i would go with my mom and sis to look at places, etc....but i would be doing my own planning on the sly.

you're right though--it could be a slippery slope, but at this stage of my life (31) i dont think that i need to feel like i have to have a conventional, traditional wedding day.

We have 6 weddings to attend this year--and we're both in 1 bridal party. And honestly, when you have that many to go to, there's not that much fun involved with going to more than 3 weddings/year, not to mention the costliness of attending them all, going to showers, etc.

i think this idea really emulates what me and my fh are all about. A great time, with our favorite friends and family. Without any pressure--and it's all our show.

i will think about it some more--thanks for your thoughts...but i think we're gonna go for it.

stay tuned...

Go for it!...sounds like a great idea! I remember reading about that actress from Father of the Bride movie...her and her fiance did this and pulled it off...everyone thought they were attending their rehersal at the church and it was REAL and then they followed it up with a casual outside party under a tent

i think that its sounds fun and if it sums up what you and your fh are all about then you should go for it. i think your wedding day should represent you both. i would never be able to keep such a big secret from my mom though lol so that will be hard. maybe you could consider telling your close family this way your parents may be able to help you with the cost. i would also make sure you had a great video guy because catching everyones expressions when they figure out its actually your wedding will be priceless.

I think thats a great idea. Go for it. I agree tell your parents, that you want a really big e-party for one reason or another and a small ceremony somewhere. Good Luck.

i think its a great idea - sometimes other people try to take over in the wedding planning and this would be 'both of yours'! as long as its handled right, no one should be able to be mad! good luck!
