Great!! our Fire safety guy just made an announcement that the police closed off 41st street btwn 7th & 8th avenues and we are NOT allowed to leave our building... .I'm on the corner of 41st & 7th Ave!!
What the !@#$%^&*(@^!$@ !!!!! This is horrible... I friggin HATE working in NYC!! This is the life I have to live, worrying about this crap!!
Has anyone heard anything about this??

All I can see from the view from where i'm at on the 18th floor is that there are about 10 police vans -swat team kinda cars and a bunch of fire trucks.. the street is empty and there are crowds of ppl that are looking to see whats going on.. you can see the crowds on the corners..
We havent heard another announcement yet..

I dont know what to think.. I'm sure if it was something life threating they would let us leave.. but I guess they dont want a mass panic until they find out something..
I'm sure the police told the Fire safety guy to make that announcement, Its probably safer and less chaos if we stay in here.

I work and live in NYC and this happens all the time, you just never hear about it on the news! A few weeks ago, they shut down the street where I live for almost two hours while the bomb squad removed a 'suspicious package.' They are just being overly cautious these days whenever they see something out of the ordinary. I don't think its necessarily cause for alarm as I've seen it happen at least twice that I can think of in the past few months.
Hopefully it's nothing! But, I hear your frustration! It freaked me out too! I had gone running that day and they wouldn't let me back on the street to get into my apartment!

What I meant was that if someone feels fearful in that situation, they should be allowed to leave. I am just hypersensitive b/c my friend was in the South Tower when they announced that nobody should leave the building. He is the ONLY one that left anyway, and every other person he worked with died.
Right now if they announced there was a suspicious package on my street and to stay here, I'd want to get out and go home. Because I am neurotic. But of course, a package is much different than an airplane - there are suspicious packages every day and most of them are nothing.

My building is so close to Penn Station and Port. Authority that I'm sure this is going to be a daily thing with the upcoming convention.. It just stinks that we have to live like this.. When you hear about things happening it doesnt seem so real - you know it's happening but you cant the feel of it till you really are face to face with a scare like this.. I can definitely say it's very nerve racking.
Ok, as I'm typing we just got another announcement that we can now leave.. they have what ever it was under control....

We had this happen by our office (55th & Bway) maybe about a month ago?
Someone left a briefcase on a street corner (probably forgot it when they got in a cab or something) and they closed off a couple of blocks of broadway and did the whole swat team/man in the colored jumpsuit stakeout as well.
We couldn't leave either. so of course we all stand by the windows (of an all windowed building no less) watching. lol.
Hopefully it will end up being nothing, and your office will just have some new afternoon gossip..

Last summer, when I was working downtown at Pace University, where I go to school, there was an abandoned briefcase at city hall, across the street. They had us evacuate the building. There was nothing about it on the news or anything. This stuff seems to go on much more than the public knows about.

Oh it's definitely the talk of the office right now.. LOL You hear ppl explaining whats going on all over the place... and like your office, we have all windows too.. Everyone scrambling to see what's happening outside..
I'm sure this wont be the last time this happens... lets just hope they are ALL false alarms!
