Our bank is giving us a hard time about the deposits we will be making from wedding gifts made out to mr. and mrs. hislastname. they said that in order for us to deposit it if its made out to both of us (with his last name) i would have to wait until after we receive our marriage certificate in the mail. also, even if he adds me to his acct with my maiden name, if the checks are made out to my first name/his last name then we can't cash them. we are leaving the next day for the HM and were going to use the wedding gifts towards our spending money. did anyone else have this problem and how did you get it resolved? any suggestions are greatly appreciated! TIA!

Are you depositing the checks into a joint account? And did you BOTH sign the backs of the checks?
I know that EVERYONE has problems with this after getting married.. GL!

my bank didn't give us a problem....our savings account was in my maiden name and his name. They told me I had to sign both my maiden name and married name and he had to sign the check also....so we had the acct# and 3 signatures on the back of each check. Not sure if this will help you but maybe you can ask your bank if this is acceptable, if not you might want to look into switching banks.

it's his account, they told me not to bother adding my name because most of the checks won't be made out to my maiden name but my married name so it wouldn't make a difference, EVEN THOUGH i'd be signing the back as well. ugh!

same here... no problem... what bank is giving you a hard time?? We used TFCU... and have never had a problem!

We deposited ours into a joint account after the honeymoon so I brought our license with us. But I have in the past deposited checks of his into my non-joint account by ATM without incident (and this was before the wedding so the last names weren't even the same). To be perfectly honest, I don't think they look very hard at the checks because I don't think they're liable under state law if it's signed (this is a very hazy bar review memory so don't quote me on this one). I would think also that married you could sign it over to single you (or vice versa) and then sign it and cash it. What does your bank say?
