SWR, but not - accepted into nyctf!

yay! after being waitlisted and not expecting to hear anything until april - i just got notified that i was accepted into the nyc teaching fellows! i'll be a special education teacher come this time next year (which is really great - i went to undergrad for art and i eventually want to do special education art therapy, so this allows me to really get experience in the special ed and bring art into the classroom/teaching). i'm just really excited b/c i had kinda pushed it aside after being waitlisted (apparently there were less spots and more applicants this year so they did it to a lot of people). yay!

oh, and the wedding related side of this is i'll have a REAL income (i'm making about 15000 this year) and seeing as we're moving in with my parents we'll be able to start a decent savings and pay for the wedding! =0)

Congratulations! I work in the city and team taught for a long time with a woman who also went to college for art/special ed. and was trained to do art therapy...

Where are you going to do your studies?

i'll definitely let you know - it's an exciting program to say the least. you'd be good teaching! but just so you know, they don't hire for art teachers (which is why i'm doing sped). if you're thinking abour that i'd say go to a local boces and get your transcript evaluated for a teaching certification, then take the extra education classes for an art certification. i think it takes about a year to finish classes and student teaching if you have everything else covered. you can also get your transcript evaluated online through the nys dept of ed, but it takes 6 or more months as opposed to 2-3 weeks through boces. let me know how it goes!

i'm sorry your job sucked (where were you working?) i'm a little frustrated at mine too right now (i really love everything about it, but the girl i work with, while sweet, can really be a complainer... )

btw - i think i'm putting some green on my dress!

it depends on which district i'm teaching in seeing as the program pays for your masters and the prof work directly with you on a lot of things, so they want the school and college to be close. i'm hoping for brooklyn college or hunter, but we'll see. if this didn't work out, i applied to hofstra's special ed/art therapy program and may go back there after i've completed this program to get certified or a masters. i'm thinking i may just get certified then look into phd possibilities (though i think that's more of a psych degree with a specialization in art therapy). i dunno, i have to look into what would fit best after this program - i haven't planned that far ahead (i didn't think i was gonna get in after being waitlisted). i definitely want to go on to get a phd though and and art therapy license in addition to sped and art teaching certifications.

were you teaching with this woman? where/what did you teach? how did she use her training - was it helpful?

thanks for the congrats!
