swr: domestic partners?

so, fh is going to be dropped from his insurance next dec, and while we're hoping he'll have a replacement by then, we also want to prepare just in case. anyone know anything about this?

where do you live? in NYC you should file as domestic partners, not sure if you have to... not too sure about LI either (though I should considering I'm a 'domestic partner' and have been for almost 3 yrs!!) But it really depends on your insurance company... check to see what their requirements are.

FH had me on his plan and I just had to sign an affidavit and show a couple of bills. But the plan he has now doesn't permit domestic partners.

Good luck!!

FH and I are domestic partners now for 5 years. We did it NYC Hall since he works in the city. We had to bring proof that we lived together and shared finances. We did it so I can be added on his health insurance plan since NYPD has a better insurance then my job. HTH If you have any further questions FM me.

My FH is my domestic partner. He is on my insurance. I just had to fill out an affidavit at work. The insurance is not pre-tax, though so it's a little higher than mine until we are married.
The only thing is, you have to be living together.

I was rejected by FH's insurance as a domestic partner, despite living together for 3 years (with both names on the lease), sharing a cell phone account, and splitting all bills. The reason why is that we kept seperate checking accounts until fairly recently. All other bills were either in my name, or his... never both.... so it's more difficult to prove than you'd expect!

From my experience, ou really need to share a bank account, loans, and leases for well over a year in order to be considered....

We did it through my company and just had to get something notarized saying we live together, arent married to anyone else and dont plan to live with/marry anyone else in the future. It was easy...ask your company.

I have been on my FI's insurance for a year now. Not every company offers this option, but many do.

If they do, you need to prove that you are living together, have a joint bank account and a bill together or a bill with both your names going to your address.

He pays a bit more to have me on it, but it's worth it.
What also stinks is that if I call our insurance company about a claim, they won't deal with me.

They will only go through him because he is the one with the plan and I am sort of like the dependent. I think that is ridiculous, but it's better than nothing!

Good Luck!

I did it. I had to show a bunch of proof of co-habitation. Joint bank account. bills to the same address. original copy of our lease with both names. It can be done but Its a bunch of paper work

Re: swr: domestic partners?

I forgot. as per New York state law. If your insurance offers a family plan. They HAVE TO ACCEPT DOMESTIC PARTNER

Re: swr: domestic partners?

Since PAPD doesn't recognize domestic partners, my FH and I got married at the courthouse, with my sister as the witness (we didn't tell anyone we did it). We are still having our 'real' wedding this summer, but I desperately needed the insurance so we decided to do it. I thought it would take away from our real wedding, but so far it hasn't.

i'm going to be teaching in th nyc public schools - does their plan accept this (ghi i think it is). the only thing i'm worried about is that after two years of living together on our own, we're moving back in with my parents to save money for the wedding. we're still living together, but i'm afraid it's gonna make it so we can't do this.

Why don't you just get married now for the insurance and have the wedding later...

Thats what FH and I did... we were already planning our wedding and had everything already set and down payments paid... but I needed surgery and my dr wasn't covered by my insurance but she was covered by his insurance so we called a judge on Wednesday and got married that Sat... just happen to be the 1 yr from when he proposed!!! We just kept our first wedding to ourselves and our parents and siblings and the big wedding 'party' is now just a couple of months away!

i'd rather not do that as tempting as it is. we both want to get married asap but i don't think that option is really for us. i'm not against it and probably couldn't make that decision until the time came, but for now i'd rather research other options.

i don't even know if this will be an issue. he may find something or we may get married right before/after he looses it and then there's no problem. i just like to be prepared in case something doesn't go according to plan. =0P i'm the kinda person who worries about everything years in advance. =0P

thanks for the help girls!

well i work at CA (computer associates) and i had to put my FH under my benefits .. all they needed was proof that we lived together and a bill that came to the address .. that was it .. we didn't have to do anything extreme ..
