SWR: how long is a personal check good for???

well...i'm writing my thank yous and had to look up how to spell someone's name. so i looked back at my wedding cards and found a check!! i don't know how that happened!

it's dated 7/15/06--is it still good???

You should call them and apologize - it's not that it still wouldn't be good, it's more like they could've over written the amount of money. (but if they're really good at keep track of their checks the money should still be there)

usually 6 months. suprised that they have not called you to tell you it wasn't cashed.

that's what i want to do, but it's a distant relative and we're not sure how they'll take it. i feel so terrible and have no idea how this happened!

The bank will only take it up to 6 months from the date it was written, but I would give a call just to tell them you are planning on cashing it

I just found a check from our e-party from January. I called the bank it was from and they said I could only deposit it as long as there wasn't a stopped payment on it.

A check is only good for 6 months from the date on the check. I would still call them to make sure the money is in the account. It is possible they could have forgotten about it.
