Forest Hills, Bayside, Whitestone....I live in Howard Beach which is a very quiet area- mostly families- I work in the city and take the A train (45 minutes each way). Astoria is very close to the city, but I'm not sure of the area, since I know it can be pretty busy.

I've heard nice things about Whitestone, especially up by the water. I have friends who have lived in the 'oakland Gardens' area of Bayside and have loved it. Super wide streets with lots of parking, good schools, safe, quiet, all the good stuff
