taking trains in Italy

Has anyone taken the train in Italy, and was it difficult to find where to go? My FI is concerned that it will be hard to find what train to go on - is everything in Italian? Will we be able to find English speaking people to point us in the right direction?

I did but it was almost 10 years ago. We had no trouble and none of us spoke Italian. If I recall correctly, some things were in English and many of the workers in the train stations spoke English.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Don't do it!!!! horrible horrible horrible! The further south you go in italy, the worse it is, apparently...

The schedule is just theoretical. There are constant strikes, sometimes not even involving transit workers , such as striking trash collectors who dump trash on the tracks... or protesters who can essentially SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE RAIL SYSTEM!!!

We planned to go only from naples to rome, and nearly never made it. The natives were all looking at us like were idiots becuase we actually were depending upon the trains running...

well, we eventually got there, but had to pay a couple hundred $$$ for a taxi to take us between 2 rail stations to circumvent the trash.

THEN, once we caught up with our train, old ladies were sitting in our seats and refused to get up. The conductor refused to move them. We had to sit on the floor...

ps- almost no english... very difficult to communicate

in summary, it's a great time!
