Talking about your budget.

Talking about your budget.

So me and the FH were at a party the other night and one of our friends asked about our wedding. They asked about how much we're spending and my FH told them how much and they were shocked because none of them have ever been married before. I thought it was a big no no to tell people how much you spending. When I brought it up to my FH he said everyone always shares their budget. He's also told half his family how much we're spending. Is this ok? Personally I don't think it's appropriate to tell people how much you're spending but is it just me?

Its an odd topic. My very close family/friends know a ballpark figure only because I need them to understand the importance of JUST SAY NO if you're unable to attend. But, as for my friends I don't really want them to know how much I'm spending and other family members either because their fav phrase is 'you guys could've bought a house instead'

I personally don't think it's a big deal.. I give people a ballpark budget if they ask. I think it's more awkward to say 'I'd rather not say' than to actually tell them. Were spending a ton, and I don't see anything wrong with sharing.. Most people who ask us are planning to get engaged soon and are just curious about what other people spend I guess. Others are just nosey but whatever.. I don't care what they think

I'm personally not comfortable talking about my budget with people. I don't mind sharing quotes if people are looking for vendors and I got a good deal, but I feel that it's no one's bussiness except for you and your partner. None of my friends and I spoke of budgets, just quotes with vendors to help make deals with vendors.

I think there's a fine line to walk about budget. I would never tell casual friends what we're spending. But, often I'll discuss a ballpark with other friends who are also planning or who just got married as in 'what are you/did you spending on photography?' or 'what is/was your per plate price?'. It's good to know that what you're spending on something is normal. We're also having a really large wedding (250-300) so our prices might be a little higher than average due to size.

I don't mind sharing with people who are recently married or engaged but I just don't feel like yelling it from the rooftops. All I say when asked that we're saving for it and leave it at that. I just don't like the idea of putting a price tag on my day or having guests come and know how much we paid for every little thing at the wedding.

I get weird reactions from people. Like my friend asked how much I spent on invites and she was like well I only spent $100 and they were great...also same with the DJ,everyone always says I could have spent less and whats funny is I think we budgeted pretty well,

This- cause people are too judgy and jelly esp if they didnt spend anything close to what you are on their wedding. I hate when people say why dont you keep the money and buy this or that... ugh

If you dont splurge a little on your wedding for you and your spouse when else will you get to splurge like that on yourself...

FH and I really don't discuss about our budget with anyone other than ourselves. I have given a couple of quotes to some friends because they needed something to work with in regards of numbers but other than that a dollar amount was never mentioned.

We have discussed our budget with family and friends. I personally have no problem discussing budget. I like letting people know a figure, especially those thinking about getting married, because it gives an idea of what they can spend, where they can save, etc. My thing is, if I tell someone what I spent for a wedding, I can then give them details on what things cost and what they should expect to spend.

I started out saying I don't care who knows....but because people have this tendency to always think you want to know their opinion, I quickly got on the side of not discussing it with anyone unless they intend on paying a portion.

There's a actually one recently married couple that I didn't tell because they spent a lot less than we're spending and I don't want to make anyone feel bad. Every one is different and I know they shouldn't feel bad but the wife is always complaining how cheap her husband is and I'd hate to spark up a fight.

This! I personally feel it's a little inappropriate, especially being the people that have asked me so far I can be 100% sure were only asking to be nosy and make a comment to somebody else about it ( based on past experience) or to compare it to themselves. Nobody we are close with has asked anything about prices.

Only my immediate family knows. I think its personal and that's what I tell people who ask unless its another bride needing help with vendors. I have learned that everyone has an opinion and I'm just not interested in what people think i ought to have spent.

We've only told close family and friends, mainly so they understand the gravity of why we have to keep the guest list to a certain number. Other people I've shared it with are those who are also planning weddings themselves, and for those that I know who have spent a lot less than us, like OOT couples, I just give a ballpark amount. I've learned my lesson when I told an old college friend from Maine what we budgeted and spent, and she gave me a big speech about why its not necessary blah blah blah. Come to find out when she inherited some money from her late grandfather, she spent almost the same amount as us. People have great poker faces/talk a great game, until its tested. smh But yeah, any other people such as colleagues, and casual friends, I think its none of their business.

Certain members of my immediate family know (basically my mom and sister because they offered to help). Not sure if FH has discussed specifics with FILs . No one has asked specifics about my budget though. I think I would get annoyed if they tried to be judgey about what I spent. I would offer quotes to another bride who is shopping around.

It depends on how comfortable you are with the person. I wouldn't mind sharing but I would pick and choose my audience and only if they asked. I'm surprised anyone is surprised about how much a traditional wedding costs nowadays!
