Has anyone paid cash to a vendor to avoid tax? If so, which vendors allow this? someone I know did this with her catering hall, 7 yrs ago, But is it risky to do that? any opinions?

Re: Tax
Most vendors will eliminate tax if you pay in cash... DJ, Photo, Video... (not sure about reception hall though) it doesnt hurt asking... when i went to visit Duet their prices were listed with a plus tax, so i asked that question and they said they would offer a discount if we paid in cash... it never hurts to ask...when you go check out vendors and when it comes time to discuss price then just ask if it includes tax or not, that will usually open up the door for you...

Re: Tax
I'm a lil skeptical about paying in cash. True they may give you a discounted price but I've read warnings against it in bridal magazines. They say to pay with credit card (gives you some extra time) or check so that you have a record of payment. This way the vendor can't give you a hard time and make unjust claims. There's no proof of payment with cash. Of course if you have a contract from a vendor you should make sure they note the initial deposit and then every payment you make on it. Just don't get stuck with unnecessary stress and headaches bc the vendor wants to play a fast one on you.

Most vendors will accept cash I would just make sure I get a written reciept on the vendors letterhead or something with the vendors name and address on it to use as proof if they try to screw you later on and say you didn't pay for something in full.

Re: Tax
But more for practical sense, I pay for everything by check or credit card (which I'll pay off immediately), for the paper trail. There are way too many news stories and TV specials about people getting screwed and not being able to prove payments made. I would hate to have to explain to a court or insurance company that I didn't pay tax.
But I'm an accountant and could lose my job, so it's not an option for me. Those little taxes add up.

Re: Tax
i think this is a bad idea. i mean yes it saves some money but it is against the law and the reasons whey some companies go out of business

Re: Tax
Most of them don't do it at all anymore - I know that my parents did w/ my Sweet 16 but that was 10 years ago - they are letting us do it at the restaurant where we are having our e-party and the only other person is the women that I am getting my chair covers from -

I paid cash to photographer, videographer and DJ. It states in the contract that payments were made, and I saved money by not paying tax. It works for us.

FH is an accountant and I work for the DOJ...a double NO NO!
anyway, I figure if I want safer streets, teachers paid well, and that whole bit, I have to do my part and pay taxes....as much as I would love to save the $$!

Re: Tax
I think if they are willing to 'discount' if you pay in cash they're shady. it's not a discount at all. The tax is not getting paid and the sale is not being reported to the IRS. It'srobably not being reported by them as income either. Forget it. Maybe I'm a goody goody. But I don't want to be involved in anything illegal

Re: Tax
FYI- our dj told us that djs are not allowed to charge tax legally. He explained that you cannot tax for a service. If you are having giveaways, then they can legally charge you tax because you are getting something. But for those who aren't make sure you aren't paying tax. My dj's wife is an accountant and she urged him to tell all of his customers.
