I think you have to pay to file, but it's like $30 or something.

I did mine on turbo tax and it wasn't free but you can pay for it right out of the return or with a credit/debit card. I don't think it was that much, maybe $40????

LOL!!! Definitely not a tax genius.... I actually have no idea what I did... I followed their instructions and then paid them at the end. All I know is that I keep checking my bank account to see if the money was deposited yet!!!

Go to www.IRS.gov they will let you know if you quailfy to do your taxes (yourself) for free..the programs walk you through

Barb, make sure you don't have anymore tax docs coming in. If you have a savings account, you should receive an interest income document. Don't file without receiving everything otherwise you'll have to do an amended return and it's a big mess.

If you make less than a certain amt, you can get your Fed return filed free. You have to check the IRS website for the links.
For $40 you can buy a basic Tubo Tax program at Staples, or whatever and you get 5 free federal tax e-file.
I do this for my family every year and instead of paying 19.95 to file a state return (sometimes its actually more than I get back) I just mail it. The Fed is always the bigger return anyway...

becca, quick questionnnnn. FH and I opened JT savings in the summer.....since we will be getting an interest income document, do we both use it when filing?? does one take it over the other/

Only 1 of you can claim the interest. FH and I did the same thing and he said he claims the interest. I think it's because we're using his address, but when I find out for sure, I'll let you know.
