I am finishing my BA and have about 40 credit left to do.
I am thinking about doing the last 40 in teacher certification for HS English.
Do you think it is better to get the certification at the BA level or just get it part part of the MA?
The thing I like about getting it at undergrad is that then I can get an MA in English and not in Education - English would be more fun for me.
Thoughts?

Re: Teacher certification question
i remember when the new certification laws were coming out they were saying that people who get certified in their undergrad could no longer choose to do their masters in just anything, and the masters had to be education related... not too sure though, just something that I remember hearing...
Personally, I would want my certification as soon as possible so I could start teaching sooner or at least do leave replacements and sub to get my foot in the door... more and more people are going back to school to be teachers right now, so the sooner you get into the school districts the better!

I think the more credits towards your certifications that you can get on the Bachelors level the more money you will save. Graduate credits simply cost more money. I had a non-education undergraduate major and had to do all of my education stuff on the graduate level. Very expensive.

Re: Teacher certification question
if you plan to go into teaching def. get any courses or certifications as soon as possible. i think that now the licensure requirements are such that you need a master's for certification. good luck!

Re: Teacher certification question
I am fuzzy on all the recent changes but if you go to the State Ed Dept. site, it can tell you probably.
A Master's in English, as opposed to a Master's in English Ed, would make you attractive to a school looking for someone to teach AP English. You would be more qualified to teach at the community college level in addition to the secondary level.
