Teacher LI Question

Ladies currently teaching on LI...question.

How easy is it to transfer from one school district to another?

Say you are teaching in Shirley or another district & then 2-3 years down the road you have an opportunity to teach in Harborfields or another good district. Is it 'easy' to transfer?

Just curious....

Re: Teacher LI Question

Within 2-3 years you are looking to get tenure so most people stay where they are at unless they hate where they teach. I've known someone who taught spanish in 1 sd and got a job in another (better sd with more $), you don't 'transfer' though, its like finding a new job all over again.

Re: Teacher LI Question

You definitely don't 'transfer'. Also after 4 years school districts do not have to compensate you for your years experience. You also can lose any inservice credits you have used for a raise. For me I have been with my district for 9 years, if I transfered districts, the new district could start me on year 4 or less.

I am in a very low paying district. I love my kids but would LOVE to leave for more money (and the difference is HUGE) but I can't in reality. I would lose my 90+ sick days, my senority, my credits and my tenure. I teach in one of the few real in demand (shortage area) disciplines and could go into a new district with demands and probably would get them but still would not get back the sick days, senority or tenure.

If a teacher was to get a new job the time to do it is in the first 3 years.

Hope that makes sense.
