Teachers...

Teachers...

We typically do not have the kind of job that we can 'go home and leave it all at work'. I am constantly thinking about my kids and things I need to do with and for them in class. I am always mentally working. Even in my sleep I am planning things I want to do with the kids. Are you guys always thinking about work too? Even when I want to be relaxing, something is always in the back of my mind. Is it just me?

No, its not just you. On the weekends I'm even planning and thinking, asking for advice. I'm a 2 year old teacher and we have to have plans to keep thier attention or the room turns into chaos.
I cant wait for Thanksgiving break!! I need a vacation!
When I think of ideas I jot them down on paper, or sticky notes and throw them in my folder.
I love my class and like I said, need to keep them busy and *interested**

It involves and takes over my entire life! As much as I love teaching and my kids, waking up at 3am just because you got a good idea for a lesson or you were upset about a situation in school creaps back into your mind begins to bother me. I try to leave it at school but can't find a way.

I know how you feel!

Glad I am not alone. Again, I love what I do. But it is easy to burn out when it is all you think about. I guess by nature we are dedicated!

Re: Teachers...

I have always said from September to June I belong to my students. I actually feel guilty that I will be leaving in April. Can you believe that I actually feel guilty for not timing having my baby better.

I dream lesson plans and leave thinking about them all the time. I work every night on the computer for them. Whether it be making lesson plans, updating the website I have made for them, writing letters for them, grading etc. Any night I don't work I feel awful and guilty. I have been trying to train myself not to socialize as much at work and to work through lunch and my preps and duty periods so that I won't take work home but that hasn't worked.

Christy you are definitely not alone!

Yeah, I know the feeling. Not only am I always thinking of work, but as a HS English teacher, you can imagine how much actual work I have sitting at home at all times!!! It literally never ends until June; I'm not kidding!

Betty... What grade do you have? If I can be of any help, just FM me. I have kindergarten and my DH has 4th grade. I have also taught first and special ed.

Just kkep in mind that as a teacher, you are shaping young lives to become better people who will grow up loving to learn. You help them make important decisions in their lives and they will always be a piece of you that they take with them throughout the rest of their life.

My favorite quote is 'To teach is to touch a life forever' and 'Without teachers, no profession is possible.' (I don't remember who wrote them and if I worded it right). All the hard work and dedication is worth it. It does get easier when you have been teaching for a while and especially have to opportunity to teach the same grade for a few years. You start spending less time letting planning take over your life and you get back into finding other things to do.

You're not alone! This is my first year teaching (I'm a hs teacher) and work/the kids are constantly on my mind. I'm really enjoying it though. I'm glad I switched careers!
