I was told in my evaluation by my cooperating teacher that I won't get a job because I am too quiet....I think she means I won't assert myself and take initiative....Is this true? I can't help it that I have a quiet personality!

Re: TEACHERS
i used to be quiet as well. even when i started subbing. then i realized the only way i would get a job is if i came across as confident and assured. it was hard at the beginning, but i'm pretty outspoken and confident now. you'll be competing against hundreds of other qualified candidates--you need to make yourself shine. good luck. feel free to FM me if you need to know more.

Re: TEACHERS
I agree... I was the same exact way. As you get older you will become more outgoing in professional enviornments and when you are trying to get a job you will learn that it is important to make relationships to get ahead. I am still struggling with being anxious when I meet principals, but I know that I need to sell myself and prove my worth in their schools to get where I want to be.
Good Luck!

Re: TEACHERS
I was the same way. My internship supervisor told me I had to act like a cheerleader and sell my enthusiasm at the interviews and with kids. High school students need enthusiasm and young kids do as well. Fake it at first, then it will come more naturally.

Re: TEACHERS
I think there is a difference in being quiet and confident. You can be both. As the others have said just sell yourself on confidence. I am giving you the advice i need to take myself.

Re: TEACHERS
Don't worry. My cooperating teacher told me my voice was annoying. I taught in the city for a year and a half and now I have been in the third best district on LI for three years. Be yourself. Confidence will come with experience. Be nice to everyone you meet and let them see how much you care about the students.

Re: TEACHERS
I have been teaching for 9 years. I was very quiet to start off with. It is very difficult to go into an experienced teacher's classroom and be assertive when you are just starting out. You just have to watch out and make sure you have good classroom management and control, you will be fine. You can be quiet and demand respect at the same time. Don't worry!

Re: TEACHERS
In the beginning it is so hard....everything is so new and it can be intimidating. I was very quiet in the beginning too. In my 2nd placement I felt much more comfortable...I think a lot had to do with me being more comfortable with the age of the kids ( I like the younger ones)...it will come in time. Good luck!

Re: TEACHERS
I kind of understand what shes saying. I was quiet and also a bit shy... I couldnt. There was no way for me. I tried my best to be outgoing and now Im a bit loud too
Just do your best to make yourself known.

Re: TEACHERS
I agree with a few girls. I am usually shy when I meet people especially when I was student teaching or observing in another school when I was younger. I was able to overcome my 'shyness' around new people and prove that I was outgoing for the kids, other teachers, faculty, and parents. Lots to please but it will come to you as you gain experience. make mental and personal notes from everything. It helps when you get your own classroom. Good luck!!!

Re: TEACHERS
Great advice ladies, thanks so much.... I am trying to make an effort with this placement-it's my last one and then I am out in the real world! It is just so intimidating, they make it look so easy and I just can't imagine how much time and effort went into a lot of that stuff and it scares me...Like today they were doing square roots- the last time I learned about that was highschool!!! I couldn't remember that....I just have to brush up on some math things!!! Plus, there are two teachers and an aide staring me down, its very intimidating!!

Re: TEACHERS
Being observed is the worst, however I can say that it has helped. In some instances I also wish there was no aide in the classroom, but in others I am thanking my lucky stars that they are there. I think we are all very nervous in the beginning, but remember you have 2 - 3 other teachers, teaching the same grade right next door there to help you. Chances are you will also get a mentor your first year which should help.
I recommend eating in the faculty room daily, you will make friends and get some ideas of what everyone else is doing in the classroom.

Re: TEACHERS
Yes, I always eat in the faculty room. They don't talk to you unless they need you to cover their class....lol

Re: TEACHERS
Definitely show some personality..depending on the grade level (especially elementary) a personality is key to getting hired!
It is also important not to come across as knowing everything, but being confident in yourself as the teacher will sure be a help. If you believe in yourself, others will too!

Re: TEACHERS
I didn't say this to promote my district. I just wanted to give her some confidence. You can't believe eveything your cooperating teacher says.
