if it is your 'dream' i say go for it

I am an assistant principal and i was a teacher for 8 years - I NEVER wanted to do anything else
I always knew i wanted to teach and i think that if it is your 'calling' then you will know

as a supervisor i can tell you that i see people everyday that should be looking elsewhere

being a teacher isnt just about teaching
it is part of who you are, how you speak to kids, how you relate to them and truly wanting to make a difference in their lives - inspire

sorry if im rambling, but this is my passion!!!

I am also a teacher. If it is your dream go for it.

Teaching is a full time career...that you bring home with you. It is an emotionally, physically, and mentally DEMANDING position.

IT IS MY DREAM JOB!!

Yup. Make sure you love it. And also know, if you are dedicated, it is A LOT of work. At least for awhile. Also, being in the right school for you is a very big factor. I could go on and on.....I have a lot to say about it, both good and bad. Please FM me if you would like to talk.

Re: Teachers!!

If you believe that teaching is really for you, then you should go for it! Hopefully you will love it!!!

But like the previous posters said, it is a very very very stressful job. The work is never done. You'll put in much more than 40 hours each week, in fact probably more than 50 or 60. And many days you'll feel underappreciated & unmotivated when you bust your butt and the kids still flunk horribly, or refuse do their homework, or won't shut up & you feel like you're literally talking to yourself. Or they curse you out or tell you they hate you. It happens so you've got to be prepared to deal with that side of teaching too.

But it can be a very rewarding job as well, for instance when the kids thank you for helping them with something, or tell you you're their best teacher, or a former student tells you how much they miss you! Little things like that mean a lot. Also, it's never boring and the day usually goes by pretty fast. And if you've got a supportive administration & adequate resources that will help you out so much.

The classes you need to become a teacher really aren't that bad at all. Student teaching is the only one where you'll actually learn anything though!

Good luck!!!!!!

Thank You all so much!!! I always remembered my teachers and omg...teachers are amazing and so inspirational. I totally agree...that you must love what you do. I love kids and I love teaching..even though it was swimming lessons.... To be honest..I would have went to school years ago for it..but I had alot of people telling me, that there are NO jobs. Im willing to take my chances now!!!

I agree 100%...do't become a teacher for summers and vacations off...out by 2 -3:00....etc....all the crap I hear people say why they want to be a teacher. You have to love kids, love learning, have lots of patience, learn how to work with students of various capabilites.

It is not an easy job. It is physically and mentally draining. If you love it and you are good at it, it is the best job in the world.

If its not for you, you will be miserable and so will the students....

I'm in my first year of teaching and I agree with the above posters said...it's not a job that everyone can do, but it is a great job if it's your calling.

I absolutely love my job, but it definitely is a lot of hard work. The goods for me definitely out way those 'off' days though.

If you think it's your calling, then go for it. I went back to school after being a year and half out and after majoring in communications. I didn't find it difficult because I enjoyed learning about the profession. I wanted to do well and it came naturally to me. Good luck to you!!!!

teaching is a way of life...it's not a job.

If it's your passion-do it!. To be honest...I didn't know I wanted to be a teacher in the beginning of my college career but I new I loved Spanish and figured it would be fun to teach it.

What makes you want to be a teacher?

Re: Teachers!!

I am a teacher and I absolutely love it! You have to love what you do and be willing to put in hard work and all of your effort. Don't just do it because of the summer vacations and all the other days off, don't do it because you don't know what else you want to do, and def don't do it because of the 'short days' of bc you think it is easy. As other people have said, many people dont beleive it but teaching is physically and emotionally draining BUT if you love it, then you won't mind it. I know I don't. You have to love kids, have patience and want to spend the time and effort needed to make a difference in kids lives, bc for a lot of them, you are their only positive role model that they can look up to. HTH!

Re: Teachers!!

I teach both 7th and 8th grade English in a private school...I chose to make teaching my career in my mid twenties and went back to school for that. Although it was not difficult to choose teaching as a career, the going back to school was hard. I did get into it pretty quickly and I truly do think that when you are a bit older and you have a focus, you can do better and enjoy it more. I found that anyway. As far as teaching goes, I love it. There are definitely both good and really bad days. Children are unpredictable and every single day is different b/c of that. The first year is the toughest, but it definitely gets easier. It is a very rewarding job...especially if and when you see that you have made even the tiniest bit of a difference. I say absolutely go for it. Best of luck to you!!!

Re: Teachers!!

I LOVE teaching!!!!! Once you are settled in, it really is such an ideal job. The day flies by because you have so much fun, in a HS like mine and I'm sure like most others, a new group comes in every 43 minutes, which keeps things interesting...and just knowing that they come in all happy to see you, with TONS of gossip and questions for you lol, is the BEST feeling in the world! However, you must really be dedicated because it's a TON of work and you can't just leave it there at 3....you bring home grading, lesson plans and the kids' problems with you...it's a never-ending job, but I wouldn't trade it for the world! I say go for it and know that you will work your butt off through college and then that will continue through student teaching, but every year it gets easier and easier!

I actually cant wait to start this chapter in my life, and I do agree that since Im older I will definatly take education more seriously!!!

Can you go to school part time towards teaching?
