What do you need to do to become a teacher? I know you need to get your masters in education, but is it just general education in the specific subject you would be teaching (like english education)? If you want to teach english, do you need to have gotten your bachelors in english or in anything? Anything else I need to know? This is for fh btw. Thanks so much ladies!

Re: Teachers
well if you are already a college graduate (bachelor degree) and don't have one in English and want to teach English: A: you can go and get your masters first! or B: you can go to NYC Teaching Fellows they are accepting applications now on their website. I want to be an elementary school teacher and my major is soc i realized i wanted to be a teacher too late when i was almost completing my soc major and they told me that i would have to start basically all over again to enter the education program because they need other requirements that was going to take me a longer time to graduate. So i was told about this program that gets you ready to teach. In the summer they give you a 7 week course work and they prepare you to start teaching by september. I already applied for Teaching Fellows and Teach for America hopefully I could get into either or program. Look into that if you would like to start teaching with your bachelors and they accept any bachelors if you want to teach english they will prepare you for those 7 weeks in the summer. I hope this helped a bit!!!

Re: Teachers
St. John's University also has a 'career change' program where you can go for teaching, you basically take the masters classes plus 27 credits in your major area (ex- if you want to teach science, by the time you're done with your degree you will need 27 credits in science + masters stuff). If you've already taken any electives in the subject they count it. FH did that for science after getting a bachelor's in TV & Film. The teaching fellows thing is great but it can be competitive especially if you want a subject that's in high demand or highly technical, I know it's much easier if you want to get into something like special ed, or if you majored in the subject for undergrad without any education focus.

Re: Teachers
IM a teacher, My friend did St. Johns program and loved it... Im going to Touro college for my masters and the program is great, except I did teaching for my undergrad. If you want to teach a specific subject, you need to take courses in that subject(as far as I know, Im early childhood)
