TEACHERS! (and teachers to be!)

TEACHERS! (and teachers to be!)

I forget who is in the whole TEACHER crowd here, I know a good handful of you... but anyway... IM SOOO EXCITED THAT I HAVE TO SHARE!

I got a notice in the mail from school saying I had to attend a mandatory meeting regarding student teaching. I thought I was FARRR from that point, since Im taking classes one by one or two by two, slowly but surely (and I know that student teaching is the point when you are just about ready or close to being done/certified, etc) So I missed the meetings (they were held when I had just come home from the hospital), but I went in today to go over what I missed....

Im already at the point (have taken enough classes to be) READY to Student Teach (part time) in September !!! I am SOOO PSYCHED! ITs starting to feel SOOO REAL !!!!!!!!!!
This part only requires 3 half-days. and by TOTAL coincidence, my MIL has offered to come here 2 days per week as of Sept, because she wants to semi-retire (and enjoy her grandsons ) So the advisor told me since I will have babysitting two days and not three, on my interview for Student Teaching, I will discuss with the Principal my days/hours, and many times, they have allowed for 1 Full-day and 1 Half day to fulfill the requirement...
Im so excited I feel like running around the block! (and that would serve me more than one purpose! )

AND Number TWO:
There's an Advisor who has been 'my buddy' from before I started school. She just happened to be someone that I got on the phone when I Called last year to ask my million questions, and from then on, she has been my pillar of strength on those days that I feel Im getting the run-around by other advisors...
Well I always pop in to say Hi to her when Im in her area.. So today I went in (she always yells at me for taking on so much, having my little munchkins at home...) Well she told me to start thinking about and planning out WHAT I will put on my resume when the day comes that I am ready to teach full time (maybe in another 18m or more...) How and Why will my resume stand out? (and right now, it will NOT stand out ) I have NO Elem Ed Teaching experience, so I better start thinking fast about what I can do... So she harps on and loves the idea that I speak, read and write ITalian and Spanish. and she told me to put my best skills to work... So I sprung up the idea that I can do (volunteer) Classes at the Library, teaching children Italian, or Teaching English to Spanish-speaking children.. Even just for the summer, something to get my resume going...
or even classes in Reading and Writing for children (another of my LOVES)... (she claims this can lead to other opportunities, who knows...) So right now, I have light bulbs flashing over my head, lots of thinking and planning to do.... The Libarian already knows me from my Moms Club activities at the Library, so hopefully I can get something going..

Its nice to get out on a gorgeous day like this (ALONE:P) and to be able to drive with the windows wide open and have all these thoughts flowin

Well of course, I hope I dont overbook myself. I do wanna enjoy some gorgeous days at the beaches and parks with my boys this summer!

Quick question:Teachers: Have you worked with Student Teachers part time like this? or is this something new? (as opposed to full time STing)? and have you seen them do the 'Required hours' spread out in different ways throughout the week?

Thanks for listening to me ramble on !!

Re: TEACHERS! (and teachers to be!)

Congrats! I think that putting together a class like that would be excellent for your career (and for you personally). That would really help you stand out! Also think about what kind of materials/handouts you can make and make available. These would be excellent for your teaching portfolio. Always be thinking of what can go in your portfolio!

I have a student teacher now (in speech-language pathology) and she comes 3 days per week. She is meeting state teaching requirements in addition to state medical and national licensure requirements at the same time. There is another student teacher only 3 days and we have had student teachers on this schedule before. I don't recall any coming any less than 3 days though.

Let me know if you have any questions. I can try to answer them!

This is part of the new NYS requirements and all principals are familiar with it. I was required to work three half-days per week last semester, but because everyone's schedules were different, some did one full day and one half-day, others did three afternoons, others did three mornings, etc. I did a mixture of all. I'm very excited for you. Good luck!

Wow that's great! I'm student teaching now (HS) five days a week and go to work straight afterwards. I would have loved only a few days a week!!

Re: TEACHERS! (and teachers to be!)

I would think it would depend on the principal and cooperating teacher. Some are sympathetic knowing a student's schedule and others stick hard and fast to their requirements. You may have to do some looking/networking outside of where your school places you to try to get what you need. Good luck with it!

Re: TEACHERS! (and teachers to be!)

The new requirements are 3 1/2 days a week, but they just write it that way so that you get the required number of hours in. I do not know of one person who actually did 3 1/2 days a week. Most did one full day and a half day. It really doesn't matter which days you go in as long as you get the hours in.

This is not easier than the old requirements because you still have to do FT student teaching. I wish it was PT instead of FT! It's both! (Can you tell I'm a stressed out FT student teacher? )

i am so freakin' confused about student teaching - can you explain that a little bit more? i know someone in one of my classes was assigned to two different schools for student teaching. is one PT and one FT? does it still take one semester to complete all of your student teaching requirements???

thanks!!!
