I graduated last January from Hunter College with my Bachelors in Childhood Education. I am currently going to Hunter for my Masters in Math and Science Education.I am still pending certification. I don't know what takes sooo long. I went for an interview last October with the Board of Ed and recieved a commitment letter, but they are not too helpful in placing and helping find a job! I am primarily looking to teach in Queens, but some areas of Brooklyn would be fine. Thanks Ladies.. This is going to be my first year so any ANY help is appreciated!!

Yeah I know. There is actually one this thursday. The problem is you have to register in advance and I never received the e-mail from my recruiter to inform me! I guess I have to wait until the next one. Thanks though!

Re: Teachers- Any openings at your schools?
will you be certified soon??
b/c FH finished grad school in the summer (June), but Hofstra doesnt give the official degree until Aug 31st - so he had to get them to write a letter saying he was finished, its just that the school waits to complete the transcripts. He didnt have any problems.
I would just show up if its an open house thing.

I believe if you have a commitment letter you have a job. The city has to place you somewhere. Placement fairs are also a great option. That is how I got my job two years ago. Good Luck!

Re: Teachers- Any openings at your schools?
Just a word of advice about this - I taught for a year in Queens by going to an open house. I even knew the region I wanted to work for so I only went to schools from that region. The school which I got a job at I really liked the principal at the interview - but the actual job was horrible!!!!! Im a special ed teacher and I had 4 jobs in one year because the principal didn't know what she was doing. Also, I had to correct IEP's of more experienced teachers. The kids were horrible and there was no school wide behavior plan!!!! If you are planning on going to a queens school, I would go and check out the school before accepting the job. My mistake was that I didn't and literally hated every minute of the job - And the kids weren't the problem!
My friend sent her resume out to different schools that she wanted to get into and was very selective. She is now in an awesome school in BKlyn which is a top performing school!
And as someone said - the commitment letter means you have a job - you might have to wait a little for a teaching job though. Another friend had a commitment letter and had to file papers at the region for a month b/c they didn't have a class for her and 10 other people!!!!!!!
Sorry for the negativity - I just don't want anyone to make the same mistake I did!

Re: Teachers- Any openings at your schools?
i got a letter of commitment from the NYCDOE as well two years ago. what i did was look up all the elementary schools in decent areas and mail them my coverletter and resume once in july and once again the last week in august. the principals are all on vacation the middle two weeks in august. when they come back, they usually have 'i quit' letters on their desk, and i wanted my resume to be in that pile too. needless to say i got about ten phone calls! i wound up in a great school! im not going to lie though, it was stressful. i got interviewed and hired the day before school started. dont stress it though, they HAVE to place you if you have a commitment letter. it may just be after the school year officially starts! fm if you any questions!

Re: Teachers- Any openings at your schools?
i work in a high school, so i don't have openings that would suit you. but, try calling schools you are interested in and ask to speak with the APO or if it's a small school, call the principal directly. i was on my school's hiring committee and i can tell you that the whole commitment letters thing was so pointless, because they never ever forwarded resumes to us (which would have helped us find good candidates as well as obviously helping you find a job).

This may sound like a stupid question, but how do you do a cover letter?

Re: Teachers- Any openings at your schools?
My advice is similar to others...
if you have a committment letter, you have a job. but if you expect the board to palce you, they are going to put you in a place where your commute *****, the prinicpal *****, you're not even teaching the grade you're certified to teach, etc. etc. (probably at least one of these scenarious will happen, but not necessarily all!) but suggestion to you, is do the research on schools on your own...personally send in your resume and cover letter... you can even hadn deliver them to schools and call the schools and ask to speak to the principal. basically, PLACE yourself... dont' let them place you. if you have a committment letter, the principal can place you in his/her building. i did this and found a great school that i was very happy in! the only reason i left was because i got a job out on LI in the grade level i realyl wanted.
GOOD LUCK!!

Re: Teachers- Any openings at your schools?
I was just hired for a teaching position in NYC. I think face- to- face contact is the best way to get a job. Believe it or not, but NYC does not have as many openings as you would think in Queens (Region 3 because it is closest to Nassua/Suffolk) and the high priced areas of Man. The city does offer a program 'Teachers of Tomorrow' which entitles teachers, who work in high need areas, to receive a bonus like 2000 for working in the area. The only catch is that you must work for a year. But.---- if you are a teacher and can get a job ANYWHERE in NY you are lucky. I got so lucky. I am placed in a new school that only hired 2 new teachers, me as one, because all the others are staying. They love it!!!
CHECK OUT THE BOE site.. it is so helpful... and sign up for the teacher's placement fairs. Although there were hundreds of people at the one I went to, you just have to be willing to get out there. Even if the school is in a 'HIGH NEEDS' area.
GOOD LUCK!
