Teachers! Can we share some projects??

Teachers! Can we share some projects??

I'm trying to come up with projects for my kids, and i feel like i am at the end of my creativity! i'll share first, though.

From Text to Television!

Materials:
1 cardboard box (no smaller than 12” and no larger than 28”)
2 wooden poles
A length of butcher paper, preferably white
Markers
Creativity
A recently read book

Turn the box so that the bottom is facing towards you. That is the 'front' of the television. Cut out a large square to be the 'screen.' Do not do this yourself. This part of your project requires you to ask your mom or dad for help! You can cover the box (this is preferred so that we don’t see that the box you used once contained your little brother’s diapers from Cosco!) Decorate the front of the box with buttons and dials as desired. Cut out tow holes on the top of the box for the wooden poles. Scotch tape the paper to the poles and role up. Open the bottom of the box and push the poles through the holes in the top of the box. Tape up the bottom and turn the poles to go to the first scene.

Your assignment is to turn your novel into a made for TV movie. You will need to include the opening credits, including the title, the author, the cast of characters and the producer (YOU!). Then you will need to create and draw at least 10 sequential events according to the book. Be creative and as artistic as you possibly can! Erase pencil lines; use a black sharpie to outline your scenes, use color!!!! You may want to add dialogue bubbles or scenes with just words like in silent movies. To organize this project, you may want to create a timeline or a story web. Just have fun and be creative!

Wow that's so creative! I don't know how creative this is but we're writing a color poem this week using a rainbow. We're learning about similies and metaphors. Last week we wrote St. Patrick's day similes and this week we're going to write the color poem. I found a blank rainbow pattern. the students will write red is.... yellow is... using metaphors then color in the rainbow. If nothing else it makes the kids think a little and will make a great bulletin board!

Great thread idea!

Did you ever use the poetry book:
Hailstone and Halibut Bones? It is a book of color poems. I use it when I teach color. Here's a link to a lesson plan using this book. I highly recommend it!Hailstones and Halibut Bones

Right now our class (second grade) is learning about dinosaurs. I have been teaching about dinosaurs for seven years now. I desperatley need new and fresh ideas! Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Try to hit crayola.com. They have a lot of hands on stuff in regard to arts and crafts that you may be able to tie in with academics if you are creative.

Re: Teachers! Can we share some projects??

I just finished a whole unit on dinosaurs with my kindergarten class. I found a lot of great ideas on these 2 websites.

http://www.sedl.org/scimath/pasopartners/dinosaurs/welcome.htmlhttp://www.cdli.ca/CITE/dinoteacher.htm http://www.sedl.org/scimath/pasopartners/dinosaurs/welcome.htm

Other ideas that worked well:
we made dinosaurs out of model magic
We took leaves and rocks and made fossil imprints in model magic
On a lesson on herbivore we talked about how some herbivore would swallow rocks to help them digest. We crushed lettuce in between two wooden blocks to show how hard it is to crush them. Then we used rocks on the lettuce to show how that helped the dinos
We played 'Dino jeopardy' with answers like 'the name of the earth at the time of the dinosaurs' (what is Pangaea?)
We talked about how dinos hatched from eggs, and how the shape of an egg helps protect the baby dino because when you roll an egg it goes in a circle, so it won't fall out of the nest. We demonstrated this with a hard boiled egg.
We did a lot of 'dino math' using dog bones in different colors/flavors- making patterns, doing addition and subtraction. We also buried these in the sand table and had the kids be palentogolist and dig up the bones.
FM me if you want more ideas!

I will add my creative lessons when my brain is awake but I do need to recommend a great chapter book to read.

Judy Moody by Megan McDonald- there are actually 5 books now.. It is a great series and Judy is a quite a character that children can relate to. Shes funny, mean, annoying, clver and all of that. My kids loved her so much they bought out all of her books at the book fair and took every one out of the library. I read the first one as a read aloud and then left it from there.

I also read Class Clown by Johanna Hurwitz... Great book, the character, Lucas Cott is similar to Judy. I read them back to back and we compared the two characters, took notes on their behaviors and character traits. After all of that we compared them in a Venn Diagram and then they got to choose who they would want to have in our class and why! It was a great, fun writing activity that got thinking... Believe it or not, it wasnt a boy girl thing.

I wold recommend for 3 and 4th grade!!

Wow!! Thanks. You actually inspired me! We are planning a dino day in second grade. We want to have centers set up in all the second grade classrooms. I think I might do the Jeopardy game. We will also be setting up a dino musuem. The students write a dino report (in school) and at home they make a diorama to go with it. Thank you! I also like the lettuce experiment. I think I'll have to try that! I am loving this thread!!!

Deb_n_Rob thanks for the link! I marked it so I can use it when I teach adjectives next month! When we did a dinosaur lesson we made imprints out of a dough mixture (flour, salt, and water) and measured out the lenthg of a few popular dinosaurs out in the hallway (used our feet just as an estimate then marked the length with a post-it..the kids loved this).

Re: Teachers! Can we share some projects??

Right now I am reading my second graders the book Flat Stanley. He is a boy who got flattened by a board, and he has lots of adventures. On one adventure his parents put him in an envelope and mailed him to California. So once we finish reading, I ask parents to send in an address of a friend or relative from out of town and the kids make their own Flat Stanley's and mail out. Then in a few weeks they return and we get to read about all the adventures that Stanley has had!!! Sometimes they even include pictures. Last year one student sent his to his aunt who works for Dave Chappelle, and we got back awesome pics with him and flat Stanley it was great!!

We just measured the dinosaurs yesterday out in the hallway. Today I assigned them a dino to research and make a diorama with. We research and write the report in school. Tomorrow we'll construct a dinosaur with broken macaroni and glue it to soil and glue mixture.
