I teach first grade and am looking for some simple yet fun and educational ideas for Constitution Day. Any suggestions?

Re: Teachers: Constitution Day
Maybe discuss w/ them the meaning of 'freedom' and 'rights' etc. You can brainstorm what rights and freedoms they have at home, school, etc. Then have them draw a pic of their favorite 'freedom'????
Sorry i couldnt be of more help. that just came to my head!
Maybe your school lib has a pic book you can read to them.
I teach middle school social studies so its hard for me to think on a first grade level.
You can also make a 'Classroom Constitution' and discuss all of the freedoms and thinsg you all want and expect in the class.
Hope it helps

Re: Teachers: Constitution Day
Our district gave us lesson plans to use for const. day. I have it at school. I will post them later if you like. I didn't read over the one for 1st grade but the one I'm using for kindergarten is something abot reading the story 'Miss Nelson is Missing' and making up a class constitution together, talking about why rules are good. Then you have the kids sign a class constitution. I just printed up my class rules and will have them sign it.
I will post the 1st grade lesson later.

Do I need to incorporate this into phys ed on Friday? I know its law now to mention it? But in specials? I have some classes that dont meet on Friday. Do I have to do it with them too?

Re: Teachers: Constitution Day
I teach kindergarten and I am doing a lesson on rules in the classroom and relating that to the rules of the country...I will focus on why we have rules in the classroom how these rules help to protect us (and relate this to the rules in the constitution.)

Re: Teachers: Constitution Day
thanks for the suggestions!
i decided to do a discussion of the importance of rules (games, classroom, at home, etc.) and then relate it to the country's rules and why they're important. Then we'll review our classroom rules and the students will write them on a piece of scroll-like paper.
Fun :)

Re: Teachers: Constitution Day
i'm reading 'This is America' or something (it's a peanuts book). And having them fill in the blanks of some notes.
It's a fifth grade standard that they need to learn later in the year, so I figured I'd give them some background on it.

Re: Teachers: Constitution Day
i heard about it, our principal said we needed to say something... im sorry i couldnt stop drop and teach something random to my 6-7 graders so i mentioned it, but she said that was fine cause social studies was going to cover it... so yes maybe it should be mentioned but give me a break every single class needs to do something?

I also teach kindergarten, and I mentioned the word Constitution, talked about the President (they had no idea who it was, got answers like Abe Lincoln and George Washington...soo funny) and then related it to rules of the classroom and school. It's hard for them ya know?
