I second Safety Town. My kids LOVE going there! I went there as a kid as well and still remember it being one of my favorite trips! :)

I believe Safety Town is in Eisenhower Park. I would contact them -- I'm sure they could forward you the proper information...

got this off the website...

Safety Town, operated by the Nassau County Police Department, provides children with a variety of learning experiences, set in a miniature town. During July and August, there are children's programs from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Children must be Nassau County residents, ages seven through nine, and accompanied by an adult. From September through June, the facility is open to school groups. Call 516-573-3190 for more information.

The only thing with Safety Town is, you may have to book a year in advance--but who knows they may have open dates. My school takes the 1st graders to the LI Game Farm and the Queens Zoo.

When I taught 2nd grade the people at Safety Town told me they only had a third grade program. That was a couple of years ago though so it might have changed. I remember hearing about a nature walk/program out of Jones Beach (I think its called the Theodore Roosevelt Preserve or something like that). We take our kids to see a play at Hofstra and then for as picnic in Eisenhower park. Its so much fun and a relatively relaxing trip for the teachers too!

I am not sure where you teach, but every year I take my first grade class to Green Meadows Farm in Queens and they love it. We go in the fall and they get a pumpkin, a pony ride, a hay ride and there are tons of animals that they have hands on experience with.

I took all of my 2nd grade classes here as well as my Pre-K's & all loved it. They have many different programs & lots to do.

You can also do apple picking upstate in the fall.

And Alley Pond in Little Neck has wonderful nature/animal programs.
