Teachers HELP PLEASE

Hi Ladies

I know this is a shot in the dark but I figured it can't hurt.
For anyone out there who works in a school district on Long Island or in Queens...I am looking for a job!

I am currently working in one of the top rated districts on the island. I just recently received my tenure and now I am being excessed due to a decrease in student population.

I have been applying EVERYWHERE with very little success, It seems that you have to KNOW someone to get a teaching job anywhere these days.

I am certified in Elem Ed and Reading (birth-6). If anyone knows of anything out there please let me know. I would be so appreciative!

Its a scary thing to be getting married and loosing your job all at the same time.

Thanks Girls

I don't think you will have such a hard time finding a job in the NYC school system in queens. I would basically send your resume to every single elementary and middle school in queens that you would be willing to travel to. YOu will get calls!
Also, the open market transfer plan is going on now. if you go on the dept. of ed website, you will be able to find listings. Good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear this! How horrible that the excitement of getting your tenure was ruined. I will keep my ears open about any positions in my district (although they are currently talking about not replacing retirees) but I still wanted to wish you luck in your search.

Don't know of anything because I teach high school, but I wanted to wish you luck. Also, when you apply in the City, know that the 'open market' system thing is pretty much just for show, and principals rarely use it to fill positions. What you need to do it go to the schools, or at least mail them your resume directly and then call. After they interview you and you get the job, you need to make sure you officially apply online so they can hire you. But they don't really look at the resumes/applications they get via that system - you have to get their attention in person (or at least by mail).

Good luck again!

if it helps i'm in a similar situation.

if you're looking to apply to board of ed
send your resumes directly to the principles of the schools that you're interested in.
as for long island, i'm sure you know this but try ny times.com and olas.

good luck!

I'm sorry that I can not help you! I live in Westchester and work in a high school in the Bronx. I know what you mean about 'knowing' people in order to get hired! It's tough. Hope things work out for you and you get something soon!

Re: Teachers HELP PLEASE

My district is hring elem. teachers for the fall. They ask that you apply online, and they give preference to candidates who have experience in using technology in the classroom and can speak Spanish...they also like teachers with reading degrees:) If you google 'copiague schools' it will bring you right to the district webpage.
Good luck...sorry that happened to you

Re: Teachers HELP PLEASE

You can also try applying for permanent sub jobs...Once you get your foot in the door of another district it will be easier

Good luck!
