I am currently in school for my MSEd in elementary ed. (I am tired of the corporate world and always wanted to be a teacher.) A friend of mine told me I should go into teaching high school (business) because I have the real world experience and that is what schools want. Is this true? And what would I go for, social studies?

Re: Teachers - I have a question
Secondary business education would be the perfect match. There are a ton of electives in that field that you would probably be great at teaching, being that you have the real life experience. A friend of mine made the same switch and is soooo happy.

That's what I asked. If I did switch I would like to continue at the school I'm at now. They don't offer secondary ed though. Sorry I confused you!

Re: Teachers - I have a question
My bff was in the business wolrd for a while and hated it.
She went back to school for business education and has to pass 2 more tests now and she can teach h.s. business. It is a great job

Re: Teachers - I have a question
A lot of people at my school come from the insurance world. They have soc studies licenses ~ economics. But some of us from business type jobs ended up with math degrees and we are able to parlay that into some technology classes like web design and desktop publishing.
Usually you will find that people from the business world are more tech savvy because they use computer apps all day long.

Interesting. So if I decide I want to switch, what would be an option? There aren't many schools in the area that offer secondary ed business.

Re: Teachers - I have a question
I would say either math or SS would be your best option. The SS studies, though, jobs are more scarce. Math jobs are pretty easy to come by and I know that math is the umbrella that many business and technology courses fall under. We don't even have a business teacher anymore, the last one retired 2 years ago. However, business ed in our school (such as Economics and the Hospitality and Travel & Tourism depts) fall under the SS AP. We have a virtual enterprise program at my school and it is headed by my carpool buddy who has an insurance background. Because he had a strong Microsoft Office knowledge base he was able to get that. He was sought out because he knowledge went further than most teachers in our building as far as the business world is concerned. I ended up doing some web design classes, although license is math, because I was an office manager before and had dealt with a lot of ecommerce before.
I have to go to training tomorrow on a new software program, again because of my computer background, but I can talk to Frank for you and get his opinion on what you should do. We both went to St Johns and then he did some work at LIU I believe.

I just wouldn't want to get stuck having to teach math. I am not very good at it! I don't know if I would even pass the program
Thank you so much for the info! I appreciate it!

Re: Teachers - I have a question
Yea- I'm surprised that someone said more ss teachers were needed than math..I know my district recently posted for both and got about 4x as many resumes for ss as they did for math...
if you're looking for a more specialized field, you def. have to go for secondary ed...I know a lot of schools are starting to develop more business programs also.

No one said that about SS

Re: Teachers - I have a question
No worries, I had to take the math CST test twice! But seriously, the more you deal with the content, the easier it is.
Just FYI: if you really want SS, you may have to work in the city. A lot of really qualified teachers have wanted to leave my school to come out to LI and there are like NO jobs. I did hear there are a lot of library specialist openings, though.

Re: Teachers - I have a question
most schoold dont offer secondary ed business.. or electives..what can you take elementary?
I love teaching. I got my ba in teaching then my MA in counseling, i love both equally! But do miss the classroom.
Just so youre aware...getting a job on LI is extremely difficult, unless your uncle is a a principal
the jobs they need are, Secondary, math, science and special ed.
other than that, it is extremely hard to get a position unless you are ok with going to a private school or working in NYC or working for at least a year or more as a sub/leave replacement
good luck
ps: Ive hears librarians too!! its all computers now.

Definitely do not want SS. I've been in the 'real world' for seven years now and teaching business sounded really great, but I also know that not every school has business classes and the ones that do don't have a huge staff for it. Science, math and english are all required, not business, so I think it would be hard for me to find a job anyway. I think I'll stick with what I'm doing. I already have 12 credits done and took the LAST.
