Teachers?? I need serious help!!!!

Hey ladies!

Just wondering if anyone completed a masters degree while they were full time teaching. If so, were you required to student teach? If so, did they let you use your own teaching hours towards your required hours??

I'm trying to finish my masters through Touro. I currently teach 8th grade and the degree is in Middle School Ed and Special Ed. They are asking me to do 200 hours of student teaching and are not allowing me to use any of my own class time because I don't currently teach special ed. Additionally, my middle school doesn't house 6th grade. So for half the hours, I'd have to travel to the elementary school and that means less time to actually spend at the school

Assuming that I could dedicate my 3 prep periods to student teaching (which is insanity and impossible), that would take 67 days. 5 days in a week... 14 weeks. Straight. Teaching with no breaks, my classes and someone elses.

Any suggestions???

I have heard of lots of people getting their Masters in another certification area while they were full-time teaching. and yes, you usualyl have to student teach again because it's a different certification. That is what i did, but luckily, i was working part-time so i was able to swing it. in your case, i would see if there is a way you could teach SUMMER school... that is how most people do it... and really it's the only way to do it and keep your sanity. Summer school should count....

HTH....
