How long (honestly) do you think it will take me to get a job via alternate route? Will anyone be willing to hire me?

I am in NJ - I have my Certificate of Eligibilty and I have passed the PRAXIS exam-a district hires me and then I receive my perm certification after a year of teaching. It is just getting my foot in the door that worries me.

Where are you looking? I know Teach for America places teachers in Newark, which tells me that they have shortage issues. I think that would be your main option. If you lived in NY, the only place you could get a position without certification is NYC. Suburban districts have no trouble filling positions with certified people. If you do look into Newark, I am sure you will get something fairly quickly.

NJ is different ..you can get a job with a CE but I was just wondering from your perspective, how will I be viewed (I have an HR background).
Yes - there are tons of positions in Newark

Are you looking to get a job on the island? I'm not sure if you can do this but maybe you can look into becoming a sub or an assistant to get your foot in the door until you get everything that you need. ETA: Oh I'm sorry...I just saw that you were talking about Jersey!!!!!

I went through an alternative route. I was hired on my first interview -- but I am teaching in a high need area.
