I am currently looking for an elem. teaching job so I work as a TA in a good district on LI. I was recently offered a perm. sub position in a not so great district. The pay would be about the same. Do you think it would be better to take the perm. sub job to get teaching experience or stick it until something better comes along (leave replacement, permanent teaching job)?
Any advice would be appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

Yes, I think you should take the sub position. I am not a teacher but I work around them every day and I see what they go through because they don't have enought experience, so go for it. Gods blessings. Plus, girl you are planning a wedding are not to long ago got married. Go for it.

that's a tough decision. honestly, i would talk to my prinicipal frankly and say what is in store for me here??? they know that it's hard to find a job and i tihnk you need to find whether or not they have any intention of hiring you or not. you can also feel him/her out of what will be available for next year (i.e. open jobs, leave replacements, etc.) you should talk about this and get a feel on whether or not they like you... i know it sounds harsh, but i've seen lots of people work as a TA for years and not get hired. but then again, in my school, the principal is very good about hiring TAs that have done a great job so she can keep them in the building.
if things don't look good from moving up as a TA to teacher in your district, i would take the permanent sub job. being a sub you get in contact with a lot more teachers who will be able to put in a good word for you as well as getting the necessary teaching experience. not that you don't teach as a TA, but as a permanent sub, you will be responsible for planning, classroom management, etc.
GOOD LUCK...feel free to FM....

Some districts, like mine, it takes forever for a person who is a TA to move to be a full time teacher. For some reason they are more apt to hire permanent subs. Talk to your principal and other people. Good luck!

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
Most districts will hire their perm. subs for a position before their TA's. Personally, if you are not going to be happy in that district, then I wouldnt go, however I do think it is a better opportunity for you! JMO- HTH!
Good luck!

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
My experience has been that districts don't hire TAs...not in that districts that I was in...It seemed that Perm Sub was a better position to be in. Also as far as speaking to the principal....I was strung along last year and I was in constant communication with the principal about my status at the school and how I could get a postion I was assured that if a postion came up that I would be considered...when they time came I was passed up for atleast 2 teaching positions

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
Being in a not so great school district is not necessarily a bad thing....I observed in a high needs school district in a rough town, and I LOVED it. It was an incredible experience, and I would love to work in a district like that. I think you should take the sub position. I think it would be a great experience. But good luck with whatever you choose!

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
i would say go with the perm sub position. that way you are getting more experience with more kids/classes & you are in charge of the whole class...not just a few kids. i was in your situation back in january...the superintendant gve me my choice of a TA position with benefits or the perm sub position without benefits (same pay basically). i chose the perm sub and i totally made the right decision. i have a teaching job now but its in a catholic school so it doesnt really count. hahaa! but looking back i def made the right choice...great experience for me! and if something opens up in that school or even that district you are a SHOE-IN!!! the teachers will go to bat for you if they like you also. good luck with your decision...im sure whatever you choose it will work out.

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
IMAO - I would accept the perm sub position. The principal at my school is really fantastic. Ex. If a para goes to school and receives her degree in Education she hires them right away. They really give you support when it comes to school. Yes, you would love to work in a great district. But , when you went for your degree it was to teach children no matter what district. The mean objective is the kids. Good Luck!

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
Thanks for everyone's help. What I think my main thing is-The perm sub job I would only have until June because they only hire you for a yr. I would be w/o health insurance then. Do you think this would be a good risk to take?

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
you have health insurance as a TA? do you get health insurance as a perm sub? each district is a little different.
Good luck whatever you choose!

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
i wouldnt take the perm sub pos. i worked as a ta in manhasset and they never hired from within... you also dont have benefits as a perm sub. keep looking for a leave replacement or tenure track position. go to NYC job fairs, its worth it.

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
YES TAKE IT.. MOST PLACES DON'T EVEN CONSIDER a TA as a TEACHER (even though when I was one, i did the same job) GO FOR IT, it's good for your resume and gets you another foot in the door!

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
take the sub position. It's hard to even get a permanent sub job, never mind a permanent position, and having experience on your resume makes a HUGE difference.
Most times, you've got to pay your dues before you get the positions that you really want.

Re: Teachers-Job Advice
It definetly dependes on how your district hires. If they don't hire TA's all that often then take the job,
