TEACHERS - need your advice!!!

TEACHERS - need your advice!!!

i have officially decided to leave corporate america and join the world of teaching. woo-hoo!!

question - i know there is a massive demand for HS math teachers. how is the demand for business teachers? i already hold an MBA in Taxation and a CPA, so if i teach business, i will need much less additional coursework than if i teach math. teaching math will require me to take another 33 courses of math, as i only took 1 college level calculus class. however, if there is zero demand for business teachers, i will just suck it up and do the math classes.

any thoughts???

thanks!!!

From what I know, it is difficult to find a job as a business teacher . . . I know a couple who have been subbing for years because of the scarcity . . .

i would say go talk to someone at whatever college you would be going to fr the credits...they can help you out the most.
i don know that dual certification is a good thing, so it might be worth it to go for the math certification just in case.
good luck!!

1. business is one of the programs that gets cut first...so the demand is not high...especially since NYS cuts schools VERY bad this year...

2. you probably could get a temporary NYC license in math since they are desperate...

If you decide this FM me...I will give you the name of a math dept head in a great Queens HS...and they are almost ALWAYS looking for teachers (b/c the school is huge)

thanks for the advice ladies!! i thought business might be a problem - districts probably have 1-2 business teachers at the most, but lots more math teachers.

erica - someone else told me about that. i haven't done HS math in 10+ years. i am afraid of being too rusty. i would definitely need to brush up on some skills before i would risk going in there uncertified.

i am meeting with the people at Dowling college to go over a gameplan. i am willing to go to school full-time, so i am hoping it will only take 18-24 months.

thanks ladies!!!

It is very difficult to get a Business teaching position. There is little demand for it. Hubby has been trying, and going for his Master's in Business. It is not easy.
Like someone said they will cut busiines programs fatser because they are NOT demanded.
Best of luck to you

I remember the business teacher in the high school I graduated from was laid off because very few people took business classes. In the high school I teach at, we don't offer business classes. With the Regents standards on the rise, there is more emphasis on the 'traditional' core subjects, such as math. If you can gat a dual license in math and business, that will help a lot. Good luck!
