Okay, here is the situation. And I am swaring on my grandmother I am not even over-doing the situation...
I have a child in my class who is severely over weight. We are on the third floor and she stops at the second wheezing.
Now, yes, some children are naturally over weight. And I understand that. But here is where I need advice.
She was hospitalized three weeks ago with a severe infection in her stomach...
Every day...and I mean EVERY day her lunch varies from the following:
Burgerking: two hamburgers and fries, chicken nuggets, and a 6' hoagie sandwich. McDonalds: 10 piece chicken nuggets, large fries hamburger, 6'hoagie sandwich or bigmac, large fries, and 6' hoagie KFC: box of chicken, one leg, one thigh, one wing, corn bread, mashed potatoes, and chicken nuggets. (with this she doesnt get the hoagie)
(Now, mind you, they must be getting this the NIGHT before because you can not get that at 6am when she is dropped off. So, it is cold.)
Her snacks are the same every day: Banana(large) a pack of oreo cookies, bag of popcorn and cheese stick.
Now, I know by watching fast food nation what mcdonalds every day did to a grown man. So, I am a mess thinking about what it could be doing to this 9 year old girl.
I was thinking her stomach is so bad because of what she is eating daily...
What can I do? I work in a private school so there is no way for the BOE to step in. But...what would you do? I just, genuinely fear for her life. The mother is the loonie mother who accused me (and I am the same nationality as her and her husband) of being a racist so I can not approach her...She may pull that card again and it's not about her...its about her young daughter...
thank you in advance...

wow... i wouldnt even know where to step in? do you have a school nurse...maybe talk to the nurse and see what she says. The nurse might be bale to talk to mom and dad about her health issues and then they might be more concerned

Wow, I am a teacher as well so I know how you feel. You might want to talk to the school nurse or the principal about this situation! That is soo unhealthy. This girl is going to get diabetes by the time she is 11 years old. Even her snacks are ridiculous. I would definitely talk to someone about that.

Re: Teachers, nurses? Help please...
I spoke to the nurse actually in October. She sat in at lunch and saw what she was eating. We looked at her absences and she has been absent the minimum of half the month every month due to stomach issues. It's almost like 'HELLO WAKE UP STOMACH ISSUES'
Shes a really sweet and caring girl too, I adore her.
The nurse said she had tried to talk to the parents about it but hte parents said they 'dont have time' where the nurse then said 'All fast food places make salads'.
And 6 months later were still here :(

I have a similar situation in my school with a boy. CPS is involved with his case but the kid knows all the answers to tell these people when they question him about what his mother feeds him for dinner etc.. The kid in my school, we think has diabetes and it is undiagnosed because he also smells like sour milk and we have to open all the windows and spray air freshener after he leaves the room. I have even heard reports of this kid going to the bathroom in his pants and he doesn't know it. They think he is so large he can't wash or wipe himself properly. He is only in 8th grade..imagine what he is going to be like later on in life!!

I like this idea but the only prob is that it seems like the parents prob dont have the time or care enough to give the girl the proper foods if she asks for it or not...you could try it, its def good option! hopfully the parents will wake up

Is ACS just a DOE program? I know it's run by the city government but shouldnt they have some say in privates schools as well? Don't you have a guidance counselor or a school nurse you can bring this up to?

We just finished our three month health lesson. I even had them create dishes with magazine pictures on 'proper eating' but, shes 9, and her parents pack her lunch :(

I agree, I think you should go to the principal of the school and inform her that you will be calling CPS. They may not do anything but I think it's ABUSE and it should be reported.

How about you set a month called health awareness month and the kids are only allowed to bring in healthy foods that they will learn about.

Re: Teachers, nurses? Help please...
my little cousin goes to a private school and as crazy and mean as this may sound (hes in kindergarten) the teacher sent letters home to the parents stating they are only allowed to bring healthy snacks into her classroom, if a child brings in a snack that is unhealthy she tells him/her to put it away and gives them an apple or some kind of healthy snack -- I know this doesnt help alot but maybe starting with the snack is a good way of making her aware of good foods to eat? I dunno I'm really at a loss -- In his school they also have one day a month where they have a Mcdonalds day etc. etc. so it's like a reward for the kids who are good -- is there anyway of getting the school to adopt this policy for your class?
I cant believe parents would feed their kids that garbage, it's such a shame. Are the parents overweight as well?

Re: Teachers, nurses? Help please...
WOW!!! sorry to crash but im just finished up nursing school and this is so unhealthy for that poor child!!!
i would say if you've tried contacting her parents.. you can call CPS either as her teacher or Anonymously sounds to me these parents have no idea what is happening to their child.. and i would normally say to stay out of it but if shes calling in that much to school something needs to be done for the child.
