Teachers please come in...

Teachers please come in...

I was just wondering if your district is having budget problems? Are teachers or programs at risk of being cut? Our district is cutting a ton, and they keep telling us it is happening all over...is this true?

HI! We just had a faculty meeting today about this. Our principal told us that we are at a 'bare bones' budget this year and teachers WILL be cut no matter if the budget passes or not. If the budget doesn't pass, we will have class sizes up to 30 or more with NO HELP! I can't imagine 30 kindergarteners in my class! Time to go out on maternity . If this budget doesn't pass we go straight to contignency. We have a budget increase of I believe she said 9.3%.

What is everyone elses?

Oh, and our contract is up too ! What are we in for??????

ETA: I'm in Smithtown, where are you?

i think districts everywhere are having this problem. i'm in nj and here legislation was passed that says that school budgets can't increase by more than 2% each year! the district that i teach in has a lot of new real estate development and lots of new students, but the legislation doesn't take that into account. even so, 2% is nothing! they also want to hold a constitutional convention to reform property taxes, which will be nothing but bad news for schools. our contract was up at the end of last year and we just finally signed a new contract last month. they offered a one time incentive for teachers to retire so they can try to stay within their budget. overall the contract wasn't too bad i guess. and at least we didn't have to strike or picket. as an slp i feel like i have some job security even though i'm not tenured here yet. one slp retired and they even have a new position added for next because our autism classes keep growing! the school budgets are just ridiculous!

I teach in a catholic school but am trying ot get into a public school...it seems like your job isn't safe anywhere...in the catholic school you have to worry about low enrollment (my school has a high enrollment but I know of a few that do not) and in the public school you have to worry about the budget! Its very disheartening!

It SEEMS that for the first time in the 3 years I am in my district that the budget is going to be okay, but we will see . . .

We are having similar issues in 3village..they are saying how tight everything will be...

I think it's really the aftermath of Roslyn...

well we dont even have a contract, never mind a budget.. havent had one since Aug 31st. I know NYC teachers dont have one either an dIm not comparing but this is a Nassau school district and every time the contract comes up, there is always a 'stall' in negotioations. We cant strike so we wear black on Fridays, wear pins, go to meetings etc.. its frustrating!!!

They have not said anything to us about that. But we are on the audit list. But we have always done everything the cheap way in my district. I know that they are hiring for next year.

We have neither a budget or a contract, so things are crazy around here....
they've been negotiating all year for a contract, with little success.
I was told last year that I was close to being cut...but this year there's very little chance, so it's not as scary.
It's sad when it comes to this though...
