Teachers, please help!

Teachers, please help!

I have my Masters in English and have experience teaching at the University level as well as a learning center. Unfortunately, I am not certified.

I am considering getting a job teaching English (at a middle school or high school level) on LI and going part-time for my M.A.T.

My questions are:

1. Do private schools advertise their job vacancies? If so, where? If not, do I just send my resume to the school - who do I address it to?

2. What do you think my salary would be? (I know it will be lower than public but I have no clue how much lower!)

3. Would you recommend this route to get certification?

4. Does teaching at a private school count towards student teaching?

ANY information you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thank you SO much!!!!

I do not believe teaching counts as student teaching. The only time that I have heard of them letting teaching at a school go for student teaching is when it is a shortage area (this is what happened to one of my department members) and they were DESPERATE for a teacher. English is not a shortage area that I know of at this time.

Private schools don't really advertise much...it's more word of mouth through their existing personnel. The salary isn't much...a friend of mine teaches at a Christian private school and makes maybe $26,000. I woulkd send your resume either to the attention of human resources or the principal. Also, some private schools might not require certification...they might accept you knowing you are scheduled for a test! I taught at a private school for special ed without cert. or a master's cuz they were desperate. I made $10 an hr and had Friday's off.

Call the Eastern Suffolk or Nassau Boces...you may have most of your requirements for certif. sometimes they waive student teaching or allow you to do it as you work...
I would recommend you get certified..esp. b/c private schools are around 20,000

Are you only looking on LI? The reason I ask is, LI private schools make less than NYC private schools. You may want to consider trying that? I taught at a private school for 2 years. The salary was $31,000 starting. As others have said, the LI salary is around $26-27,000.
Also you may want to consider teaching NYC public school. They have programs to become certified if you do not currently have your certification.

My husband is a High School English teacher and his salary is not much either. They are so underpaid it's not funny.

I hear that you make more money teaching in College and also in the High Schools out in Long Island.

My Husband teaches in queens.
