Does anyone know anything about switching your certification to other states? We are moving to NH, and I just recieved my initial certificate in NY, and I am sending resumes to school in NH, but Iam reading the website and it says you need 3 years teaching experience to switch certifications? Has anyone else done this? It's such a confusing thing! Thank you all!

Re: Teachers, question!
I would call BOCES...they have the answers to all the confusing certification questions.

Re: Teachers, question!
It depends on the state. I am certified to teach in Massachusetts and because I did not teach there for 5 years, my certification means nothing in NYS. You have to check the reciprocity requirements of each state. To switch TO NYS from most other states, it's 5 years teaching experience, but I didn't think it was a problem switching out of NYS. But if it says 3 years, it's 3 years. However, check how easy it is to get certified in NH, it may just be that you need to retake their state tests for certification. HTH.

Thanks, I wonder if I teach there for 3 years if that counts. Would they just take me with my initial and they I would get certified there. AHH so many questions!

No, you need to teach HERE for three years. I already tried that when I moved back to NY

Re: Teachers, question!
I'm trying to switch my cert from Massachusetts to New York, so if NH works any way in the same way, then all of your coursework and student teaching and everything counts, you just have to take the cert exams and do any extras they might require (for example, NY requires a mandated reporting course that MA doesn't).
It seems that's how it works with states that have reciprocity. I'd try giving them a call though. Good luck!

Re: Teachers, question!
Oh no, we want to move there now, before I even started teaching here. This is not good. I don't know what to do. Maybe there is an alternative certificate thing I can do. This is upsetting! I am going to send the resumes anyway, just to see what happens. I know they have a teacher shortage there, so maybe they will take me if they are desperate!

Re: Teachers, question!
I don't think you should have a problem with this. Most states have reciprocity with NYS which means if you have a NY state license, you can teach there under some sort of provisional license... you will probably need to take their state exams if applicable and possibly some extra course work but usually you can do that after you get a job/while you teach.
I went to college in PA so my first license was actually a PA license...I had no problem getting a job in NY, all I had to do was take the NYS teaching certification exams to get my NY license. In the meantime, NYS gave me a temporary NYS license; when my tests were scored and cleared, I received my NYS license and I've had it ever since. I didn't even teach in PA (except for student teaching).... I wouldn't worry about this.
I would suggest going on the New Hampshire education dept. website and see what they say.... good luck.

Thanks for all your help girls. Yes, I've been on the website, and it's confusing. I am just going to send my resumes, and see what happens. I shouldn't worry so much about something that hasn't happened yet I guess! Thanks!
