Re: Teachers who are already Married...

you need to go to the Teacher Certification page off the NYSED site:

www.nysed.gov

Go to Teachers and then certification.

They now have this online thing called TEACH. Create a username and password to create an account. Once you log in, all your certifications should come up. You can then request a name change request for your certicate(s). You do have to write them a letter though with a copy of your marriage license before they will issue it. You can order the new name change certificate once your license arrives to them. It's $25.00 per certificate. I only did my one certificate that's permanent...the other one, I'm still prvisional and just applied for the permanent one under my new name.

HTH!!!! FM if questions

I think you should just keep you maiden name on your teaching certificates. I have heard from my friends that when they tried to change their names on their certificates it took almost a year to do it and why pay the state MORE money if you really don't have to. Unless it is killing you, I would just leave it.

If you want to change it, email this person and ask for the form...I can't find it online.

I don't think it will effect you... as long as you can prove that that was your last name, I don't see how it could effect you....unless you were looking for a new job, then it might, but even then I don't see why it would really matter.
Don't give the state any more money... it is crazy how much you have to spend just to be a teacher!!! lol

It is in your best interest to change it.... it just makes life easier. If you're changing it on everything else, it would make sense to me to be sure that your teaching certificates, etc. are in the same name.....

NYS goes by your name and S.S.....it's so important that it's all the same...this is how they track you through thesystem. if you've changed your name with Social Security for example, you have to change it on your teaching cert.

ALSO, YOU MUST CHANGE IT WITH NYS RETIREMENT SYSTEM AS WELL!!! (the teacher pension system) they also go by what the state has onfile for you.... and by your pension ID number and SS. # you also need to change your beneficiary to your husband.... if that's what you want.

is changing it with the retirment system the same thing as changing your status on the change of status form? i am doing all this now and it is kinda daunting
