anyone who is a teacher here, would you consdier having a baby before you are tenured? would it matter where you stand financially moreso then if you are tenured or not? TIA

Re: teachers without tenure
I am not a parent, I am not even TTC. However, I am a teacher. I think it is important to become tenured first. I have seen girls lose their jobs before tenure. It really depends on if you 'need' your salary I guess. But, when you are tenured you are safer.

Re: teachers without tenure
I have two friends who got pregnant the first year of teaching and so far so good... the first one got pregnant about halfway through her first year and the department and the administration was very supportive. Another friend of mine had just ACCEPTED the job and found out that she was pregnant, she told them right away and they arranged for her to have a leave replacement (she's on maternity right now).
So far, the first one will be getting tenure this June, as far as I know... and the other, well, they seem to like her.
I personally am not tenured and would WANT to wait until I had tenure but if the administration likes you, you *should* be all right.
There might be legal issues regarding this, but it's easy for them to find loopholes.
I think it would matter more financially... but sometimes, like with my two friends, it was a surprise!

Re: teachers without tenure
Though I have not seen anyone not have a position I would strongly recommend that you have your tenure first. There is another girl in my school pregnant and due 2 weeks before me. The difference in our maternity leave and the benefits I am getting as opposed to her is a lot. Sometimes it's not about the job as it is about the benefits, days buy back and other things. If you can do it wait for your tenure.

You need to be employed over a year in most cases to receive full maternity leave...I have heard of many who have had children prior to tenure, and tenure has still been awarded...but your time out of the building doesnt always count towards seniority

Re: teachers without tenure
I'm currently a first year teacher. I don't plan on waiting until I have tenure to become pregnant. I'm not putting family on hold for a job, it's not worth it for us. What if we have problems having kids and wish we could have tried sooner? I know people that have kids before having tenure and it wasn't a problem.

Re: teachers without tenure
FMLA (family leave act) grants you 12 weeks....
My district gives 6 weeks paid (8 if a c-section), then the other 6 weeks are unpaid and you must pay for your benefits...
