teachers...how often do you take personal days and...

can you give me a basic idea of generic sub plans? i teach 5th grade and although we just had a day off yesterday, i would love a random day off for myself. all i do is devote my time to work, whether at school or at home and it is taking its tole on me.

I don't usually take them unless I have a good occasion/event. Sorry, I can't help with the sub plans b/c I'm Speech and they don't usually get me a sub. I got one once and was like, ***? I didn't know what to tell her....she never even worked with sp. ed....I said, wait until the Asperger's kids show up!

where do you work? if it's the NYC DOE then i would leave plans that follow the prototype (sickening as it is) ... if you're lucky enough not to work with a prototype, i would keep the plans as routine as possible so the kids know what to do ... generic things such as a read aloud and written response is always good ... also have the sub review a math lesson you've already taught so the kids are comfortable with the material ...
(i teach 5th grade too!)

To answer your question, rarely I average 1-2 sick days a year (I have accumulated 90 days so far). IMO it's more of a pain the neck since they don't get me a Spanish sub. I teach middle school so I can't help with 5th grade plans.

I used to sub a lot and from a sub to a teacher - the most detailed plans are the best for the sub and the class. I used to have teachers leave nothing - or say - do the emergency plans and there were none. The best was when I had a teacher specifically write out the days plans - period by period, or activity by activity - or leave their (neatly-written) plan book.
Just thought you could use the sub's point of view!

ITA. Leave detailed plans that include each activity you want for each subject. I am a sub too and it helps when the plans are more detailed. It makes the day run more smoothly.

leave them a seating chart too, so they will know the kids names!! When subbing I always feared getting asked to go into the elem school because I wouldnt know what to do with them all day -- I know having their names will help with behavior greatly... also how about leaving out some books to have reading time or something

I dont like taking personal or sick days because im terrified what will happen with a sub (i teach art at the HS then travel to the elem to teach Kin & 1st grade!)

wow! thanks for the responses. but what if you aren't planning to be out? when i know i am going to be out, i leave good plans. i used to leave tons of dittos, too, but i guess i'm looking for the kinds of plans or activities to leave when i am not expecting to be out. anyway, thank you all! i am just wondering about calling in sick if we are getting a blizzard b/c we all know bloomburg wouldn't close.

Oh not planing to be out. I have emergency plans that a monkey could teach in my closet all photocopied and ready to go with packet, answer key and directions. I have been using them for years ( I have enough for a week long emergency) and I just leave them in there. If I ever need to use them, then the first thing I put in for long term first thing is September.

are these plans from a book or where did you get them? that is a smart idea...plans for a week! you are brilliant!

ohh... the 'unplanned' absence! ... i just leave my planbook in school and let the sub work from them ... is that a possibility?

Seating charts, great idea. I often want to get to know who certain students are and where they are sitting but sometimes don't even get a class list .

I believe emergency plans are dittos or general class work that is taken from a book.

I teach a special so I cant really help you with plans..

I just wanted to say if you dont have tenure BEWARE LOL

I took off 5 sick days last year b/c Im a single mom and my son or I was very sick and I know they were questioning my future employment b/c of my absences (even though Im allowed 15 sick and 3 personal)

Good Luck and I say if you need a day... TAKE IT! If you dont use it you lose it :)

They are photocopies from a book, and questions based on the reading and one is a grammar packet. These are cultural things that I never get to so I don't have to worry about using them. See if you can find a book on short stories, cut off the endings and have the kids creating new endings. They can read them as a class and then after doing their writings they can share their new endings- would that work for your grade level?

I actually am taking tomorrow off to go look for dresses, my principal is very cool, and I just told her yesterday that I wanted it off. I usually leave very detailed plans, BUT plans that anyone can do. I teach second grade, and basically I leave worksheets and stuff that the kids can do with little help. I also put everything in time frames, so they aren't working on one thing too long, and the kids don't get bored. I really liked when teachers did this when I was a sub, I really hated when they just left there plan book, because I had know idea how they wanted me to teach it and what the kids knew already, so I find this the easiest route.
