Teachers....Question

Teachers....Question

How many of you actually walked into schools and dropped off copies of your resume?

Was it successful?

Did you get past the secretary?

Would you recommend it?

Thanks.

Personally, I would not just walk in and drop off a resume. Schools are tight on their security and the chances of someone who matters seeing you drop off your resume are slim. I think it's more professional to send it in the mail, imo.

I wouldn't do it either!
I feel like a lot of people who aren't in education say things to me like - oh - just go and drop a resume - not really understanding about security, etc.
I think it would be a waste of your time. Better to just mail it in.
That's also become somewhat of a pain because I've mailed in resumes to some districts just to get a postcard back saying they only accept online resumes!
Good luck!

It does make sense, especially with security. I just had an asst. principal at a school tell me that instead of an anonymous resume coming in the mail you are able to put a face to the name.

Anyone else?

A lot of schools now don't accept paper resumes anymore. You have to log on tho their websites and fill out a full form and upload your resume and cover letter. It takes a good half hour to complete it.

As for going in to drop off a resume, I say, Why not? It can't hurt and it's better than not doing anything at all!!

i've done it and gotten an interview from it (didn't get the job, but did at least get called!).
i don't think there is anything wrong w/ it at all ... what's the worst that can happen - they turn you away? no big deal! worth the risk, IMO!

Re: Teachers....Question

I posted this on another thread... if you really are interested in the district/school, I would do it. I have come in to set up my classroom in the summer and the mail piles up at times and so many resumes just sit there unopened for weeks.. some might not even get opened... so many people work hard to get their resume out and dont even know if it got in someones hands. I would try it- what have you got to lose?

Re: Teachers....Question

I just got my very first teaching job (hooray!), and what I learned from my search is that most districts now want you to apply to their websites and attach your resume and cover letter. Some districts won't even accept resumes via snail mail anymore.

I'm not sure how schools would react to an in-person drop-off, but doing so might help you to get a feel for the school and whether or not you'd like to teach there. If you're greeted warmly, that will definitely tell you something about the environment.

The down side to dropping off is that you may only get face time with a secretary, and usually secretaries don't help with the hiring decisions.

Best of luck with your search!
