For the past month, Lyla has been fussing like crazy while nursing. It used to be my time to relax, but now nursing is every 5 minutes here and there, and she's not even eating to eat, it's more like to go to sleep. I often end up standing and bouncing while trying to nurse her. I always try to burp her and make sure that's not hte problem, but now that she's refusing a bottle too, I think she may be teething.
She does drool a lot, and eats her hands and everything else that she can actually grasp (she still doesn't have full hand control). I think I see a little white spot on her gum, but it's not in the front where the first teeth usually come in, it's more to the side. She'll be 4 months on the 12th. Could she have started teething at 3 months? I'm so confused.

Re: Teething or Not?
Niha, it definitely sounds like Lyla could be teething. Do you know if you or Peter were early teethers? These things tend to be genetic, so if you cut your teeth early, chance are Lyla will too.
Paul also started to teethe at 3 months. Most of the time, it did not bother him, but there were moments when NOTHING could make him happy. The ****ing motion that they use to eat aggrevates the teething pain, which could explain why she's not interested in eating. Try offering Lyla a cold teether or cold washcloth before nursing - perhaps it will numb her gums a little so she can eat.

Re: Teething or Not?
ALex started teething at three months and change.. his first tooth actually cut a little to the side about 19 weeks. His second tooth came in at 21 weeks, and made the other in the middle. They are perfect now.
It DEFINATELY sounds like shes teething though.. Ask your doc the next time you go.. and if you stick your fingers in her mouth to check and see alot make sure they are super clean, since its cold season!

Re: Teething or Not?
See I still don't understand the stages of teething. When people say, the baby is teething, and they are using Orajel, how do they know? I can't tell how much pain Lyla is really in, her main symptoms are fussing while nursing, refusing the bottle, and waking up every 1-2 hours at night. Doesn't the painful part of teething take place over the course of a couple of days, when teh tooth is actually cutting through and finally comes up? She's been doing this for a month, and the frequent nightwaking has been for about 2 weeks. I usually nurse her for 15 min and she falls back asleep, but is up again very soon.

Re: Teething or Not?
Does she spit up or vomit alot? If so, it could be reflux. If not she may have what is known as 'silent reflux'. She has many classic symptoms. The burning causes them to feel uncomfortable eating and then they get too scared to eat since they associate it with pain. Babies with reflux tend to wake often because the acid comes up when they are lying flat. If you can prop her mattress at one end or put her to sleep in a bouncer, car seat or swing you may see a difference. I would take her to the dr. if this continues.

Victoria, She doesn't vomit or spit up a lot. She has only spit up a lot of milk a couple of times. And every once in a while, she spits up a little. Is there a test they do to see if it is really reflux, or is it just based on sxs?

There are tests they can do, but they are not usually necessary unless the initial treatments do not work. Your dr. should be able to tell you if he/she thinks it is silent reflux. They may also refer you to a ped. gastr. dr. There are some common meds. used to treat reflux before tests are done. I tried everything recomm. before finally putting her on Zantac and taking her to a specialist. Please talk to your dr. about this since reflux left untreated can damage the esophagus. I am not trying to scare you, but educate you with things I learned as a BTDT mom. I hope it just turns out that Lyla is a fussy eater.

She sounds like she is teething but it might be awhile before you see any little white toofies popping out of her gums. I dont remember the exact timeline for Luke but he showed signs of teething for awhile before anything came through. The sucking creates pressure on their already tender gums and that's why they get fussy. Check with you doctor before you use any topical stuff like Anbesol though.
