We are interested in a house but the tank is underground and every single person I spoke to about it said to get rid of it or fill it in. So, how much does that cost approximately? Is it safe to do that or should we forget it?

You can hire someone to do this work. They will dig approx. 4' to the top of the submerged oil tank, cut it open and fill it with foam. It is safe to abandon an oil tank this way. If this oil tank is an existing abadoned tank then chances are, it's already been filled. You should check with the seller to see how long the tank has been abandoned. To do this work, it will cost around $1200. If you want to permenantly remove the tank, it will cost more for disposal fee and to fill the void with soil. This information is from a registered architect at my firm.

Thank you so much. The oil tank is below ground and currently being used by the owner. So, we would have to have it pumped, cleaned and then filled. We also would like to put a new oil tank into the basement instead.

... also, can you get a credit from the seller on this item?
We got a $1500 credit for a rusted steel lintel when we bought our house.

I see.. they should not charge you extra for cleaning and pumping out the oil. In fact, they will make money from the oil. I don't know the price per gallon for oil, we have a gas heater.

they do rust over time and can collapse, that's why it's filled solid with foam to prevent that. It will not leak because it will no longer be used to store oil.

We have one in our driveway and my parents never express interest in removing it.....I think that they are fine..even when they aren't used anymore.
