telling your guests what to wear to your wedding ...

ok so me and my FH got a wedding invitation in the mail ... FH grew up with this girl and his family and her family has always been very close. at the very bottom of the invitation it says, 'black tie invited' okkkkk which means??? does that mean i need to go out and buy a gown?

i found this online:
'A Black Tie Optional or Black Tie Invited gives you the option of wearing a tuxedo or formal dress, but it should clue you into the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.'

i just don't understand why people feel the need to tell you what to wear to their wedding ... i mean i already had a dress picked out! how do you feel about telling pepole how to dress for your wedding?

Hmmmm sounds to me that they are basically saying Black Tie Optional...in different words. That's what I get out of that. Personally, I don't think you need to go out and buy a gown. I was just at a black tie wedding and I was really really concerned about what to wear. I didn't want to wear a gown, so I bought a black cocktail dress. I am glad I did, because about 85% of the women were in shorter cocktail dresses and not gowns. As far as FH is concerned...I would say 100% he needs to wear a tux if it said 'Black Tie' but that 'invited' word is just getting to me....I think its optional.

yea i mean its nice that they want to have a formal wedding but sometimes i just feel like you know the people you are inviting and you know no one is going to walk in in jeans or like crap sooo why even write that?

I have never heard of Black tie invited... I don't want to tell people what to wear but I don't want people coming very casual... But I am not having a black tie wedding.

Definitely wear it. Trust me, you will not be the only one in a cocktail dress. The black tie wedding I went to was at a reallllllllly fancy country club and I still wore cocktail length. I feel like some of the girls in gowns felt more out of place than the girls in cocktail dresses!

We just got a black tie invited invite as well! Maybe we're going to the same wedding. I am still wearing a cocktail length dress but in black satin. FH is going to wear a black suit - we are usually overdressed for every wedding we go to so we think we might luck out this time
