Is it pointless to take temps if your period is irregular?

No... it's good to take your temps especially if you're irregular. You will then be able to see what's going on with your body. Even if it's different every month. You'll get to see when you're about to Ovulate, etc.

A couple of things to consider, I have been doing it since August. It takes a couple of months to understand your cycle.
Chart it -- go to FertilityFriend.com for a trial period.
You have to be consistant and take it the same time everyday, including weekends!
Go to CVS and get the Basal Cell Thermometer
Good luck its pretty amazing. I can predict when my period is coming based on my temp.

I agree with everything said. It definitely worked for me - and my cycles were very irregular.

My cycles are REALLY irregular- at this point my last period was 9/7.
