Temp/Summer work in NYC?

Temp/Summer work in NYC?

Just wondering if anyone knows of any temp/summer work in the city currently. I just moved to NY from San Diego and will be looking for a teaching job at a college/jr. college, but I need something to help bring the money in for now. I just graduated with my MFA in creative writing. I'd love something in publishing, but I'm not picky. I have a lot of office experience too. Just thought I'd check since you are all so helpful! TIA!

Have you tried temp. agencies? I have had a ton of friends who were hired full time from positions they got through temp. agencies. I work at a college, and they do hire some adjunct professors to teach summer classes during the summer but they require a doctorate...

Thanks for the tip! I'm applying to some temp positions through Monster as we type, but I'm not looking for anything temp to perm right now. Though not all colleges will go for it, an MFA is a terminal degree (essentially equal to a doctorate) and allows me to teach at the university level. My first choice for a career would be teaching composition and/or creative writing at the college level.

I know, the college where I work has an english major, but not a creative writing major, so they require a PhD in english, and wouldn't accept a Master of Fine Arts...I am sure you will have better luck with schools with a creative writing major....I'm sure you have looked here, but check out the Chronicle for all the college and university listings...Good luck! Lots of schools in the city to check out, and you should be able to adjunct for the fall if nothing else.

ETS: Check out this at Hofstra! Teaching position

One summer when I was a teacher I worked for a temp agency that was located internally at Grey Advertising. I worked a few different jobs there so stayed in the same building just moved departments as needed.

So its just an idea to check out some large companies and see if they have internal temp agencies. Maybe McGraw Hill has something like that. You can try calling the HR dept.

Good luck!
