We started by renting to a friend, and once we were comfortable with our arrangement with him, we let him bring in a roommate.

We rent a basement apt. now and found our landlord on Craigslist.

We put an ad in the pennysaver -- I also have a eral estate agent who lust does rentals and is excellent at finding great tenants.

We used our realtor to find out tenants the last 2 times. Before that it was a friend of ours who we rented to.
We put an ad in the pennysaver too at one point but we got some pretty scary people so we decided not to do that again. We got things like a family of FOUR for a 1BR apt!!

I had two terrible tenants. The worst was a rec. from a friend! The tenant ended up screwing both myself and the friend. Be very careful -- if someone is craafty enough he or she can get around a background check (mine used her sister's ss# and name, and used her mother as her last 'landlord.') After thousands in attorney's fees, court costs, and damage to my house, I will never rent again. I know there are good people out there (I was a very good tenant myself, once!), but they are hard to find. Good luck!
