Terri Schiavo spinoff

Terri Schiavo spinoff

What i find interesting is that...and what others might not realize is that...other people have had their feeding tube taken out who were not as bad (the damage to her brain that is) as Terri

Yet everyone is making such a big deal that it was done in this case

WHY is it that the others aren't debated, why is president bush not involed in that???

It probably has a lot to do w/ the parents/husband issue too, because of the fact that they did not agree.

I'm just glad that she is finally at rest, and I don't really wanna talk about it anymore.

but rather the system itself

I believe it is because of the presence of the court in this case which ultimately brought in the media. I do, however, remember hearing about this case years ago.

It is just like any other socially debated issue. It is one case that brings it to public light...such as Rosa Parks with civil rights, Roe v Wade on the subject of a woman's choice...etc.

Hmmmmm

what i find interesting is that a portion of the public are so outraged about what happened to terri...but what about everyone else..
the people who have more responsiveness (is that a word LOL) and have their life support removed....

Where is the public outcry for them...

I feel that the publicity in this case is sad

99% of the cases are not in the media like Terri Shiavo's was. that's why there isn't any outcry.

You have to remember Red, you work in an industry where you see, hear, read and are part of these types of issues a lot more than someone in my industry who only gets snippets of stories from places like cnn.com or the ny daily news.

The publicity in this case was GOOD if only for one reason: because it brought the issues to light where they can be debated, maybe the laws changed. It made plenty of people including all of the LIW community to think about living wills and DNR's ...

I completely agree with you. I think the media attention and publicity in this case is distasteful and disrespectful to all parties involoved. Unfortunately, all news programs are out to get the best ratings and their companies are all publicly traded companies that want to increase profits for Wall Street. News media does not always put forth an objective opinion or portray a story in it's true light. They also choose stories based on sensationalism, not what is best for the public.

true...but i guess i disagree with the publicity being good. It was good in HER SPECIFIC case..yes (i guess) BUT not as a whole!

Wait, I don't understand this ... can you explain?

Fh thinks it has to do with the media and if there weren't a large dum of money involved we wouldnt hear of it before. Also because her family is rich and they cna afford all of these appeals whereas most people would not be able to afford it.

i know I'm not really attacking the question here, but that's just a thought

well it told her story...but as for the whole taking someone off a feeding tube act as a whole

the media really didn't show that much on it..

How everyday this thing happens and in comparison...Terri's condition was a lot worse than others who have had their feeding tube removed

i don't think her family is rich?

well that's kind of a debate on media then no? And what the parts of the story they chose to focus on and the angle they choose to portray.

That can be a HUGE debate because media (radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, etc...) do stories and ANGLES that get ratings so nothing you read is going to be unbiased.

i guess...but i think that the media informed us about the cause..it is up to us to find out about it more...?

ESPECIALLY when people are soo hard core with the opinions!

That's the thing though, most people are very loud with their opinions but aren't willing to find out more information to make better educated statements or it doesn't touch them enough to make moves to change the system.
Not everyone can care about every cause and some people just like to know enough (and that may be just hearing a 45 second story on the 10 o'clock news) to voice their opinion.

But after reading about what our own president said about Terri, from another thread, i was shocked.
SHocked that he should say such statemtns and know that this kind of thing goes on ALL THE TIME.

HE should definately be more informed before addressing our nation no?
Jan05Bride Posted:

Re: Terri Schiavo spinoff

you are surprised at what the president said??? I'm not ... he's been ramming 'his personal belief's' down out throat for what 6 years?
For the record, I don't believe a president should ram their personal belief's down anyone's throat ... they should be setting up laws for the good of the people and society not for their personal beliefs. (hope that made sense ...)

ETA: it's very hard to make an OBJECTIVE decision about anything ... your subjective self is always going to have influence over the 'facts', it's just a matter of how much influence you allow it.

I think part of the reason her case recieved so much attention has to do with money too:

- the $ that the husband got from the
malpractice suit

-the money he was offered to turn Terri'c care over to her parents- $1 million and then $10 million i think

-on msnbc.com, she is referred to as being born into a 'well-to-do' family, that makes me think of moneywell to do unless terri's parent's lawyer was working for free, it must have cost them a fortune over the years.

-i agree with marymoon- a lot of people in that situation don't have the money for the kind of care Terri was receiving for very long. it may be possible that the money ran out, and that may play part in the decision to remove a feeding tube. if they can't afford the care, i don't think they could afford the lawyers to bring the case to court and out in the open.

i think her parents called attention to the matter. they wanted to get the public on their side. and as the case progressed, more and more people had an opinion as to what happens to this total stranger.

i think more cases like this don't come across the news because the families want to keep it private and decide what is best by themselves.
