I think that is perfect.
We received gifts prior to the wedding and that is basically what we wrote

DEB!!!!!!! HOLY MAMA it's been a while since I've seen you on here. I would have ask the dreaded question 'how is married life?' but I read it in your avatar . Chicka I want to see pictures of your dress, the decor, the BM necklaces, shot everything from your wedding!!!!!!!!!!
Ok now to answer your post....I would not add or remove a thing. & Kath

Re: thank you note
hey Deb!!! hope you're doing well!! it sounds good but I would change it slightly to:
We really missed you at the wedding. Thank you for thinking of us, you didn't have to send us a gift, but we greatly appreciate it.
I don't know why, but the 'not necessary' part was throwing me off.
take care Deb, hope to see you on the boards more!! stop by the newlywed board sometime!

i don't like the 'your gift was not necessary'.... i would take that out... it rubs me the wrong way. they gave you a gift beacuse they wanted to, not because they feel that they had to... so i would say something along the lines of 'your kindess and thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated'

I agree on taking out the reference to 'not necessary' as well as the part that says 'missed you at the wedding.' In a writing situation, that can be interpreted as chastising the giver for not coming. From your post, that doesn't seem to be what you mean, but that may not come through in a thank you note, which is necessarily brief. Just include the standard 'thanks for the item, we love using it, see you soon.'

Re: thank you note
Here is what we said to those that sent gifts that weren't invited. We just replaced names, gifts and gift use in and out of these:
Dear Mrs. X,
Thank you so much for your lovely wedding gift of the silver sleigh bell ornament! We can’t wait to use it next year on our tree! Our wedding day could not have been more wonderful and being remembered by special friends like you makes it all the more sweet. Thank you again and we hope that you have a New Year filled with blessings, happiness and good health.
Love, XXX

It was so thoughtful and gracious of you to Think of us in the celebration of our special day. Your gift was most generous and unexpected.
