I'll share a little of what happened:
Most of us were under the impression that it was a group that helps women cope mostly with unplanned pregnancies regardless of how they choose to deal with it, whether it be by abortion, adoption, or raising the child. However, it turned out to be a group with Catholic affiliations and that was something that was never made clear at any point in the process until we got there and saw the crosses everywhere. They teach abstinence before marriage, are clearly anti abortion, and in the beginning, they even insinuated that they are against birth control (for anyone) because it takes away 'the gift of giving life.' We even wound up getting into a somewhat of a debate about abortion when the woman giving the presentation made a comment about how many women don't stop at one abortion. I have a few friends and family members who have had one and not one of them used it for birth control-they made a mistake, handled it as they thought they should and moved on. They even said abortion is not the answer to a pregnancy conceived in rape.
While I can't speak for everyone, they were far too conservative for most of us. On my way out, I even saw a pamphlet that said (roughly) 'The Deadly Effect of Abortion: Breast Cancer.' Please. Show me a study that proves that.
Aside from how it went, it was a pleasure meeting Colleen and Diana and seeing Victoria again. Anna, hopefully I'll catch you next time. Diana, thanks again for organizing this.

Wacky, thank you for setting this up. Although it ws disappointing that the goals of the place were not in line with ours, I am still happy we went. I think the donation will be put to good use, and I was so happy to meet up with everyone. It is nice to put a face to the screenname.

I feel the same way...as my 2 friends that came with me. I don't think it was a waste of our time - I think what we did (shopping for items that women need and will use) is a good thing.
It was nice to meet Victoria and JennP - I like putting faces to screennames.

I agree with what everyone else said; I'm glad we went.
I'd still like to get involved with something, maybe after the holidays. I haven't done volunteer work on a regular basis since college and I miss it.
Let's work on this in January!

Girls, I think you all did a great job. The fact that you dont follow their beliefs (or beleive the same things) shouldnt really matter. The fact of the matter is you helped women in need at the perfect time of year. If they made you feel uncomfortable, then that was wrong of them..
Maybe I'll give my donations to Birthright? (Theyre also right in my area)
GREAT JOB GIRLS !!
Im IN to go to LITTLE FLOWER !!
It either has to be January or after March for me.

Anna, you're right that it doesn't matter at the end of the day what the organization believes. What matters is that the donations will go to someone who needs them. That's why we all still donated what we brought. (Besides, 'You guys are crazy, I'm taking my baby shampoo back!' is pretty obnoxious.) However, there are so many organizations on Long Island to donate to that I'd rather pick one that I can support with not only my wallet but my heart as well.
I've never heard of Birthright, but do what feels comfortable for you. Either way what you're doing is wonderful.
Little Flower sounds great! I'll find out what I can about it.
