So, what's the etiquette on thanking people for engagement gifts? Should I call or is sending a thank you card sufficient? Mom says I need to call.

I have never heard of calling- but a thank you card is expected

My FH and I have been sending out thank you cards. I think send out thank you cards is more personal it is showing them you are grateful to them for getting you such nice gifts for your engagement.

I just have a quest on this is for unexpected gifts rt NOT from an engagement party? b/c I didn't have one yet. Anyway I called rt away b/c we weren't there when they were given to us but now I'm thinking I should send out some cards as well.

These are unexpected gifts, not for an engagement party. I think writing a card takes more effort and is more thoughtful .
My mother is extremely old fashioned and believes in doing everything by the book, we are yet to agree on anything for the wedding! Still love her though!
