I will say something like this for a close relative 'We missed you on our wedding day but thank you sincerely for the gift and kind thoughts you sent. It really meant a lot to us.'

Thanks that's perfect I'm trying to get them done now though... so I'm just changing it to 'we will miss you on our wedding day...'
