Ok so as much as I hope everyone had a great holiday, we all know that with family comes drama. Heres where you can vent
My story: Everything was going fabulously at In laws' - my mom, dad and brother showed up for dessert
again, everthing was cool until wedding talk started so my Funcle makes a comment about why havent we booked his reccomended dj- we explained its too expensive- well whats your budget he says- we say 20,000....for him thats chump change so he goes crazy and starts saying how we cant have a cheapo wedding and my mom sticks up for us saying ' when its your daughter wedding you have a say- until then keep your nose out of it!' ((go mom!!))
hes shocked cause noone in the family speaks to him like that (hes all about the $- the more you have or the more you spend the better people you are )
later his wife says 'well when MY daughter gets married well have saved enough for her to have 100,000 dollar wedding'! (a dig at my mom for not contributing heavily to the wedding)
mom swallows it but as they leave tell me that 'if that ***** ever talks to me like that again....'
so drama now between my fam and Fil's----aargh!!!

My family never even called me to say Happy Thanksgiving.
But I had a nice one with my FIL's.
No horror stories, just the usual dose of negligence and emotional neglect from my parents.
It's worse when your in laws are the good ones, and your family is the one your FH dreads seeing....

i'm sorry your day was bad. whenever i have to see my cousin, it ruins a holiday. if my child would ever talk to me the way my cousin talks to my aunt, they'll be some trouble. i always get a headache from her.

mine wasnt any better although I was prepared that it would end up this way... my ffil got drunk and became a total jerk, Greg and I ended up being in a pissy mood because of that and of course we got in a fight and as of now we are not talking... you gotta love holidays

Im sorry you guys had trouble on your holiday! Mine was OK except for the fact that FI had to work (he's a cop) and it just reminded me that I will be alone for most of the holiday until he retires in Oh about 20 years. But I did the good future daughter in law thing and went to both families alone, which is fine but its always going to be that way. It doesnt compare to the bad night that you you guys had though. Im sorry, family can be tuff!

Re: Thanksgiving horror stories: vent here
fh and i are spending the weekend with my brother and his wife and kids, and are having a fabulous time!!
my VENT is at the FILs... who got very annoyed at fh last weekend, because he didn't have his cell phone turned on for a day (we were at my mom's and had forgotten the charger...), and so didn't get the message that they had to put down the family dog. i know, SO SAD, but what was fh going to do anyway, since they are in florida and he is in ny?!? they made a HUGE deal about not having been able to get in touch with him, and fmil was extremely pissy.
SO yesterday we called them to wish them a happy holiday, and fmil says that she had been cursing us all day because we hadn't called. so fh is like, umm... are we not calling you now? and isn't this just leftover anger from last weekend? ANYWAY, ever since last weekend i have been getting pissy, petty emails from fmil NAGGING me about stuff about the wedding. i want to tell her to LAY OFF sometimes she is SO PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE, which is probably my one pet peeve in life. so i'm not liking her at the moment.

Re: Thanksgiving horror stories: vent here
Great thread!
FSIL started with everyone (tradition I'm told) and I had to get a bit mean. FI's family does a circle and prayer before dinner and then everyone has to say what they are thankful for this year. Most people said family & friends but FSIL's youngest said 'my big new house, dad's new car, mom's new truck and the basketball hoop that I don't have but would be thankful for!!!!!' He was totally serious too. This kid has had a cell phone for like 5 years and he always gets any new game or gadget on the market. He will be hell in a few years if they ever tell him no.
After everyone spoke FSIL had to comment about it. FI did not mention her in his thank you's and she felt the need to mention it. She did not do that to me though or one cousin (who buried her mom on Tuesday).
Later FSIL said some crap about I have been wearing 'her ring' long enough and she wanted it back. She is jealous that my stone is larger than hers and has brought it up for weeks. So, I told her 'Don't make me cut you, did you forget I'm a Brooklyn girl.' LOL FI said her face changed and she was pissed but I had not bothered to even look up. Later she told her younger son (about 14) what I had said conveniently leaving out her part.....and saying I threatened to cut his mom. A cousin chimed in and told the entire story and then her son just looked at my ring and covered his eyes like it was blinding him. LOL LOL His mom was even more pissed.
She later said some crap to FI about taking an entire pie home. He had left and asked me to make sure he got a pie so I put one to the side since there were tons of them. When we were leaving she asked FI 'how did you rate a whole pie?' She said that crap knowing her son walked off and hid a pie earlier so I spoke up and said 'because he said he wanted it and I got it for him' then she shut her mouth. It was all just petty as hell but about what I expected. We later went to another cousin's home (from which FSIL copied nearly every piece of furniture down to the trashcans) and we spent the night there. FSIL was pissed to find out since we stopped back at her house before coming to NY.
It was still a great time although everyone asked about the wedding date and people I never met (not FI's family) asked for invitaitons.
ETA - Early in the night FI's cousin (friend of his ex) said 'Congratulations, I hope everything works out' which I really felt was a jab at me. By the end of the night she was much nicer though and actually seemed sincere. FI handed out our engagement announcement cards before we left and although he announced at the beginning of the night that we are engaged, nobody really mentioned it until he handed out the cards. This same cousin then came over to look at my ring and was super nice. Not sure why the announcement cards made such a big hit but the actual words didn't? Oh well.

Wow - and I thought I was the only one that these wonderful things happen to....
Well - the first 2 hours were OK until around 11:30pm my mom and FH got into an argument over the money situation and our wedding. Then my Mom saids she isn't going anywhere (we were supose to go to uncle's house for dinner around 3:00pm) I start crying for about an hour and beg her to change her mind. FH just leaves the house. Fnally, about 2:30 everyone gets alittle more calm and I convince my mom to let it go for the day. We all went to unlces and had a great time until around 7 when the conversation comes up again and my mom doesn't want to eat desert with us. Once agin, I stress out. About 8:30 everyone is happy again.
OMG: what an emotional rollercoaster.

Re: Thanksgiving horror stories: vent here
my sister and her FH bought a house a few months ago right by my parents so they wanted to have thanksgiving there. her FH works at a bank (in white plains.. they have an apartment in westchester) and claimed he had to work on thanksgiving. we all thought this was kind of weird.. but no one said anything.. okay, we all said something.. but still. so we all came up on wednesday night (except for her FH) and helped her cook all day thanksgiving and get the house 'ready'.. around 6ish he shows up. we're starving at this point. but we figured okay maybe he went out to his parents house and just didn't want to tell us and then he came up here.
so of course we all question him on work. and hes like oh the drive out here was more work. which is true.. considering the bank was closed. so then i (of course) ask him 'was it busy today' and he ignores me. i'm like hello? was it busy at the bank today? and hes like oh, i didn't have work. i'm like oh thats weird.. did you go to your aunts house? he goes 'no, i was at the apartment all day'
now, i know i was the instigator here.. but seriously.. he sat at home and played video games all day long instead of helping his fiance cook dinner in THEIR house for their FIRST thanksgiving. thats ridiculous. i told my FH that if he ever did something like that, he would no longer be my FH.
then last night.. her FH gets all mad at her cause me, her, and my FH went to go see Mitch Hedburg on tuesday night. her FH really likes him so he got mad. so shes just like well i'm sorry, i would have invited you but i know how much you love missing out on important things and playing video games!
that shut him right up. it was great. no ones fighting, we just keep picking on each other.

I just got back on the boards - was away for a bit, and just saw this. Wow. I can totally relate. My parents are divorced, and so it's only one parent and stepparent we can't stand (the other side we love) - and that parent never called on the holiday, and is not talking to us. But it hurts a lot, doesn't it. I feel hurt, and on top of it, a little guilty because this one side of the family is so mean to FH - and he's such a great guy. Family can suck, can't they.
to you Bunnymonkey - I hope you're feeling better now!

OMG!! Are you serious?? I would NEVER speak to my SO if he did this to me. It's extremely disrespectful, hurtful and embarassing!! I hope your sister made him pay!!!
