We are hosting our first Thanksgiving. Our family has always done a huge dinner with all the trimmings and a ton of deserts. My DH appears to want to take it to the next level with a menu that would take an entire day to consume I have bring him back to reality.

Re: Thanksgiving Menus - How much can you really eat
LOL...Fran, you DH sounds like he comes from a family like mine!
We usually start with apps, antipaste platter, cheese/crackers.
Then it's a pasta course...usually manicotti or lasagne complete with meatballs, sausage, braciole.
THEN, it's time for turkey, stuffing, sides, salad, etc.
Oh, yeah...after a nap, dessert!
We always say we go overboard and will scale back the next year, but it never happens.

My sister and I did thanksgiving for the first time last year...Grandma usually did it. We had Turkey and all the trimmings, soup to start, as few appys, then dessert and everyone walked away full but not overstuffed!!

Fran,
Our family does the same thing
Appetizers, usually antipast or cheese and crackers with pepperoni
Re: Thanksgiving Menus - How much can you really eat
Michelle, I love your smilie there!
We just have dinner with the side dishes and a salad starter since there is only a handful of us.

I'm Italian... need I say more? We do the same as Michelle's family.
Although I get stuffed to the gills and a little uncomfortable, I really miss all of the 'extras' when I have Thanksgiving with Patrick's family. They just do the turkey dinner, and I always feel like something is missing.

Who has room for turkey after antipasta soup lasagna... etc etc
we look at the turkey and just say 'wow how much does it weigh, thats a big turkey'
and then have it for leftovers the rest of the week...

Re: Thanksgiving Menus - How much can you really eat
We usually have some appetizers, then the big dinner (turkey and all the sides), and then a huge dessert.
My mother has a monopoly on Thanksgiving Dinner, though. She almost refuses to go to anyone else's house. We all have to come to her, or have a Thanksgiving on our own without her. And now that she bought her Ethan Allen dining room set, she's determined to get use out of it every holiday she can.
I think that's a little extreme. What if I want to have Thanksgiving at my house one year???

Re: Thanksgiving Menus - How much can you really eat
I usually make tons of appetizers and turkey and many many side dishes. I am Italian, but if I added something Italian to my menu I think it would be too much food.

Re: Thanksgiving Menus - How much can you really eat
Karen - I''m the opposite - I''ll cook if I have to and when Dad thinks we should offer to reciprocate but if someone asks first I''m all 'sure no problem we''ll be there!' LOL Then again my apt can hardly fit more than 6 ppl comfortably. And no dining room =( If I cook it''s usually at dad''s house.
My aunt does TG every year. Which fine by me she lives upstate and it''s really pretty up there =)

your family sounds like mine then too fran - the more food the merrier - we have a small thanksgiving and still have a 25+ turkey and more sides than you can shake a stick at....my mom claims she loves leftovers!

Re: Thanksgiving Menus - How much can you really eat
So my Italian Thanksgiving isn't unusual. My grandfather used to ask my mom if she could stuff the turkey with lasagna
