I was wondering if any one negotiated prices with any of their vendors especially the catering hall. I'm in love with this one place but their price is just a bit high. My FH said its not worth the extra money and we should go with the cheaper place but I LOVE this place. Does anyone have any tips?

you can negotiate ANYTHING. I got my RH to go down $4 pp and throw in a LOT of extra's for free. I also got my photgrapher to go down in price.
Go to the RH again and ask them if they can do any better on the price, if they say no and let you walk out, then go somewhere else.

Re: the art of negotiation
No real tips here because I completely dread negotiating! I’m horrible at it; always hating to hurt people’s feelings (how ridiculous is that?!). When I do negotiate, I end up talking relatively quietly to the person with me…like “Oh, doesn’t this and that place offer this extra service?” or “Isn’t that place a better bargain?” Or you could just come out and say, “Look, I want to book here but I need you to work with me on the prices.” What place are you looking at, btw?
Good luck and let us know how it goes!

OMG my FH negotiates everything, he does such a great job at it. They are the sales person they need you more then you need them b/c there is so many vendors out there. Prices can be very high but do what you have too, do your shopping and comparisons.

Vanderbilt Mansion at Dowling
Haven’t been there so I have no clue how flexible they are…maybe FM some people who are booked there asking about their experience? Worse comes to worse, you could say, “I know for a fact you gave this person this price” but again, I suck at negotiating.

Re: the art of negotiation
EVERYONE im sure negotiates...its the nature of the business. They can afford to do it for goodness sakes and they want your business so go for it. worse thing they will say is 'sorry i cant do that'

My tip, just be direct and you MUST do your homework. Talk to places that are extremely similar so you have a price to tell them.
We went to some places that came down close to $50/person just to try and get our business because they knew the prices we got were VERY competitive.
They should negotiate with you as long as you ask.
When we looked our RH we didn't feel the need to negotiate. Their price was MUCH lower than the other places and I fell in love with it as soon as I walked in. They were offering us what we felt was a really good price and we were getting a lot more than other places. There's only one thing I wish I could get them to throw in but didn't bother.

Even though they're all lessing properties, I think they pretty much compete with each other.
I didn't see Vanderbilt Mansion but I did see Timber point and W Sayville they were competiting with each other.

Re: the art of negotiation
glad to hear about the negotiations. A few of the places i like are in the 65-70pp range and i'd love to be able to bring that down a bit! And if they can't stick to my budget i know someone can! I guess my biggest pointer just from experience with other things (NWR) is to not sound afraid! If you ask like you're afraid they will say no or you show your weakness they will use it and be less likely to give in. They need the business and they know people are going to try to get a better rate, and they will if they continue to shop around! So just go for it.. sound confident...go in there feeling your best so you can really hit em with your best shot!!!! Good luck!!!
